THE AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON

THE 1 NEW FLAGSHIP,

Press Assaciation—By Telegraph—Copyright

LONDON, October 11. (Received Oct. 12, at 4.42 p.m.) Vice-admiral Fanshawe's flagship for the Australian station .will be the first-class cruiser Spartiate. Mr Innes says it has been considered heretofore desirable that the naval commander-in-chief should rank next to the Governor of the colony. The higher status of the Governorgeneral of the Commonwealth was sufficient to explain the choice of a viceadmiral to the command of the Australian station.

The Spartiate is one of the Diadem class, and was built in 1898". She is of 11,000 tons displacement, of 16,500 horse-power, and lias a nominal speed of 20.5 knots. She has sixteen 6in q.f. guns, fourteen 12-pounder q.f., and twenty small q.f. guns. She has three torpedo-ejectors.
