PRESERVATION INLET GOLDFIELD.
CHBISIJIAS AND NEW YEAR'S FESTIVITIES,
.;. - Thia far out-of-the-way place (writeß a correspondent) was the scene of. gay doings on Christmas Day, when a, grand ball was given to commemorate the opening of the :;ew ball at Sherlock's hotel. New Year's Day inaugurated our first regatta and sports, and, considering that most of the mining population are now away for their holidays, I cannot help sayiiJg it reflects great credit upon those who took it in hand and carried it through to such a successful termination. The masterly manner in which Mr F. M'Phadyn carried out his duties as handicapper and starter of the regatta cannot be too highly commended. Credit is also due to Mr W. Thompson and Mr W. Bates, who officiated as referees and managers of the various sports and contests. We have had a long spell of fine weather in this district, and it is to be hoped tourists tthd othere will favour this delightful spot with a visit, as some of the most beautiful scenery is to be viewed in this charming inlet, and many places of interest can be visited each day—such as the fairy-like caves at Gulches Head, thu waterfall at Revolver Bay, and the cascades at the head of Long Sound.
As most of the miners are cow away for their holidays little is doing either at the reefs or in alluvial claims.
The following are details of the regatta and sports:— . "
