An ample supply of pure water for th<* use of the inhabitants of punedin is dally becoming a mattw of urgent necessity j and as the increasing prosperitj of the Otagogoid fields justifies the anticipation of v large and rapid increase in the population of tht town, this necessity assumes an importance whicl cannot be exaggerated. The streams of water which ran through the town, and which were once sufficient and suitable for al requirements, are now no longer capable of affording, nor is it desirable to rely upon those source.' for, a supply of this essential element of healtL and cleanliness. Any undertaking which shall not pi'ovide largeh for the present and future wants of this rising 'city will, in the opinion of the promoters of this company be unworthy of support, and it is with a view to the fulfilment of this object that they have decided upon availing themselves of the best of several sources oi suppiy which are practically inexhaustible, and in which no engineering- difficulties present themselves. In order to secure the advantages of the advice and suggestions of the most practical and experienced engineers and scientific men in the Province, the promoters have determined to offer a suitable premium for the best devised scheme for supplying the town and suburbs with a never-failing and power" ful supply of pure and wholesome water. Contractors of known ability and experience are prepared to undertake and proceed whh the works as soon as practicable. It is proposed that the capital shall be £30,000 in 6,000 shares of £5 each, with jwwer to increase the capital. A prduninary depos:t of 10s per share to be paid to the credit of the Company's account with the Bank of New Zealand, upon application for shares; a farther payment oi' 10s per share on allotment; and the subsequent calls to be iua<le at the rate of £1 per share, and at intervals of not less than two months. The Company will be incorporated under the " Joint Stock. Companies Act," and be conducted by a Board of Directors to be elected at the first general meeting of the bharebolders in terms of said Act. The qualification for voting at such first general meeting shall be the payment, of £1 per share, and sharehoJders holding twenty-five shares shall be eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. The promoters considering that the working classes and small householders are peculiarly interested in, and will receive great and lasting benefit from this project, anticipate that every such inhabitant of the Town will consider it bis duty to at once enrol himself as a shareholder in the Compaßy. As a medium for the investment of Capital, no j reasonable doubt can be entertained of the success or remunerative character ef the scheme. In England, , in Scotland, and in the adjacent colonies, similar undertakings have proved most profitable to the shareholders, and in a sanatory and pecuniary point of view the # advantages which the inhabitants of Dunedin will derive from a superabundant supply "of pure water cannot be estimated till actually within the reach of every individual In the single item of Insurance which now can only iv certain circumstances be effected and at a ruinous rate, it will benefit the owners of property by a reduction of present rates of premium from 90s and 55s per cent to about 10s and 5s per cent. In consequence of a simi- j jar undertaking having been in'reduced into Mebourne, an extensive fire there is now almost an in possibility, while during the period that Melbourne -yas without its present ample supply of water, the loss of property by fire-amounted to a much larger sum than would have constructed several water-works of immense magnitude, and if immediate steps are not taken to prevent such a calamity as an extensive fire m this thickly populated town, it Eiav devastate more property in one ukht than-the entire capital of .the Company now jhlout to bf established. , In these respects" it;is impossible to estimate the ' J alue o/ • the works which it is designed to construct here; but apart therefrom, and on sanatory and economical considerations, it is believed that ari'anYtile' supply of pure water permeating the town is of sufficient urgency and importance to induce the Government and the public most heartily to support this undertaking. ■ * ". Application for Shares will be received at a future date, oi' which, due notice will be gives.
