WELLINGTON.
By the Lombard and Yarrow we have received Wellington papers £to 23rd inst. We extract the following from the Independent of that date. Wanganui.—Several on dits have been flying about lately, but how much dependence can be placed on them is another matter. From native reports we hear^ that the _ troops have occupied latnraimika, meeting wifch simply passive resistance. Let us hope thafc it is so. Heremia, a chief of some importance at Otaki. has arrived from the Waikato, and we learn thafc his Majesty King Matutaere may shortly be expected on the Wanganui ; it. is further anticipated that he may pass on to Otaki for the purpose of visiting his loved subjects in those delectable regions. How soon this may be the case is another matter. It seems at present to keep the native mind in suspense, and to be a fruitful theme for discussion at all village runangas. There is but one evil that his visit may be at all likely to entail, ancl that is that the waverers in his ranks may. become more strengthened in their adhesion, and the work of Mr White may be all nullified. But when we consider that in the event of any collision we are best with as few allies as possible, it is perhaps scarcely to be regretted. The general opinion amongst the better sort of natives appears to be that in the event of no outbreak taking place between the Europeans and the King party, the Government natives and the King natives must before long come to a serious difference, and they not unnaturally expest thafc the Government will protect tbem. How snch a state of things is to be met, appears a difficulty. That they would have a tail* and legal demand upon our support is beyond doubt, and such a breoch amongso themselves might be the cause of serious difficulties to us. The Traveller's Bride, is lying in the river, loading with pig 3 and geese for Otago. It is understood that she will ply as .a regular trader betwixt here and ntago, and will be a great convenience to the district.
