■fin the Provincial Council on Saturday,' Several notices of motion having been given, and other business disposed of, On the* motion of Mr Walker the House went into Committee on the Message No. 15 (New Hundreds). Mr Gillies was opposed to the unnecessary proclamation of Hundreds. With regard to those now before the House, there was no evidence on which to support or oppose them. The Provincial Secretary said the Government had the opinion of the Chief Surveyor in favor ! of the Maniatoto district being declared a Hundred. ; Me Hardy, moved an amendment to the effect that •the Manniatoto Hundred Avas not likely to prove atr tractive, on account of its distance from bush and its uncettain climate. Mr M'Master oppose! the declaration of the Hundred, representing that it would not meet the re"qxiirements of the small capitalists for whom it was •intended, and as one interested pointing out the injustice of talcing away country that was only nowbeginning to pay the runholder. He would have no objection to a small town with some 5,000 acres round it. He should be glad to see it tried. Mr Cargill thought, there was reason to complain of the conduct of the Government, especially with regard to Maniatoto. He moved, as ah amendment, that his Honor's attention be drawn to the resolution of the' Council, adopted in consideration of the report of the Select Committee on Crown Lands. The Provincial Solicitor having replied in support of the measure the House divided, when both tne amendments were lost, and the original motion •carried.
The House adjourned to 1 o'clock on Monday (this day).
