The steamer Titania, from the different Southlandports, reached Port Chalmers early in the morning, and subsequently proceeded to town, her passage to .*■ and from having been very satisfactory in point of lime. Captain Jarvey reports that an effort is yet being made to float the Guiding Star, recentlystranded, an' 1 that there are still gcod hopes of the attempt proving successful. The only other arrival for the day has been tho cutter Alpha, which ha 3 brought another freight of pigs and produce from the Chatham Islands. ■ The Prince Alfred sailed for the Bluff in the afternr I °. nJ l^ Q Geelong in the forenoon for Oamaru, to winch plac?,-as to the intermediate porta, she continues to carry large cargoes and numerous passengers. . . , .- A peculiar circumstance occurred at Port Chalmers ~ yesterday, and. has since puzzled the concentrated learning of the population. Four or five sea-gulls, wliile skimming through the air at a considerable .. ._ ftjutuae, wore teen suddenly to flutter and fall into the wafer, whore they soon died, and were picked up bythe curious ov hashed ashore. As they bad ev£ dentlynpt been shot at, no firing being allowed in the port, and no report being heard, it is supposed lhat they must bave died either from the effects of some poisonous matter picked up on the surface of the water, or from some peculiar atmospheric influence. A3 some of the birds have been preserved for analysis, a few days will decide what has been the real cause. The Notos, from Otago, is reported as having arrived at Sydney, after a fifteen days passage. *» HYDROGRAPHIC NOTICE-AUSTRALIA. m, , . NoilTH East Coast. • , oSi*"'"^ are magnetic. Variation 5| deg. East m 1862, 4 B Information has been received from the Colonial ?Qrf xrTT t-? S Victo, ri3 > Australia, dated 23rd May, ISM, that Commander Norman, of Her Majesty's Colonial steam sloop Victoria, on her passaee through tlie Inner route of Torres Strait, discovered a dangerous rock about 8 miles northward of Cape Sidraouth • also that he has verified the existence of the Chilcott rocks which- have hitherto been considered doubtful.* . The Norman rock is about 30 yards broad, of coral formation, and has only 2 feet on it at low water. It hes abem tone third of a mile off tbe west side of No. VII I. island, in a position which passing vessels'might oboose for anchorage with easterly wind?. The Chilcott rocks, lying off the eastern side of the same island, near the fair wav off the Inner route, were lound at low water, the southern one in tbe posi tion marked in tbe Admiralty chart, and the northern one bearing North from it, it is stated at.150 yards apart (Lieut. The safest Course to avoid them is to borrow to the eastward towards the Barrier reefs rather tban towards No. VIII. island, until well north or south of the island / Hydrographic Office, Admiralty, ' ,' London, 7th August, 1862. ■ 'Se« Admiralty Charts:—Australia, Coral Sea' and Great Earner Reefs, Sheet 2, No. 2,764 • Australia, East Coast, Sheet2o, N0,2,353; and Australia, Northern portion, No. 2,759n, on which these rocks are inserted.
