An ample supply of pure water forthunse of the inhabitants of Dunedin is daily becoming a matter of urgent necessity; and as the increasing prospej ity of the Otago gold fields justifies the anticipation of a large aud rapid increase in tlie population of the town, this necessity assumes an importance which cannot be exaggerated. The streams of water which ran through the town, and which were once sufficient and suitable for all requirements, are now no longer capable of affordiug, nor is it desirable to rely upon those sources ■r-for, a- supply- of this essential-element of- health and cleanliness. Any-undertaking which shall not provide largely for the present and future wants of this rising city Will, in the opinion of the promoters of this gompany be unworthy of support, and it is with a view to tlie fulfilment of tliu object that they have decided upon availing themselves of the best of several sources ot supply -yvhkk are practically inexhaustible, and iv which no engineering difficulties present themselves. In order to secure the advantages of the advice and suggestions of the most practical and experienced engineers and scientific meu in the Province, the pronioters have determined to offer a suitable premium for the best devised scheme for supplying the town and suburbs with a never-faiiing and powerful supply of pure and wholesome water. Contractors of known ability and experience are prepared to undertake and proceed with the works as soon as practicable. "ft"*B proposed that the capital shall be £30,000 in 6,000 shares of £o each, with power to increase the capital. A preliminary depos't of 10s per share to be paid io the credit of the Company's account with the Bank] of New Zealand, upon application for shares; a farther payment ot 10s per snare on allotment; and the subsequent calls to be made at the rate of £L pei snaie, and at intervals of not less, than1 two months. The Company will be incorporated unler the Joint Stock Companies Act," ana be conducted by a Boaid of Directors to be elected at the first general meeting of the bhareholders in terms of said Act. The qualification for voting at such first general ■meeting shall be the payment ot £l per share, and shareholders holding t\yenty-five shares shall be eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. The promoters considering that the working classes and small householders are peculiarly interested in, and will receive great and lasting beuefit from th»« project, anticipate that such inhabitant of the Town will coDfcider it his duty to at once enrol himself as a shareholder iri the Company. • As a medium for the investment of Capital,, no reasonable doubt can be entertained of the success or remunerative character of the scheme. In England, in Scotland, and in the adjacent colonies, similar under: akinga have proved most profitable to the shareholders, and in a sanatory and pecuniary point of view the advantages which the inhabitants of Dunedin will derive from a superabundant supply of pure water cannot be estimated till actually within the reach of every individual < i In the single item of Insurance' which now' can only in certain circumstances be effected, and at a ruinous rate, it wdl benefit the owners of property by a reduction of present rates of'premium from 90s and 553 per cent to about 10s and 5s per/cent. In consequence of a>s!milatfhindertaking havingi-been iniroduced intoMe'bourne, an extensive fire there is now almost an in possibility, while during, theperiod that Melbourne was withouVits 'present ample supply* of Iwater, the loss of property by fire amounted to a much larger sum than would have constructed several water-works of immense magnitude, and if immediate steps are not taken to prevent such a ea'amity as an extensive fire ' in this thickly populated town, ifc may devastate * more property in one night than the entire capital of the Company now about to be established. In these respects if is impossible to estimate the value of the works which it is designed "to construct here; but apart therefrom, and on sanatory and economical considerations, it is believed that an ample Supply, of .pure "water permeating-the town is of'suffi- _ cient urgency and importance to induce the Government and the public most .heartily to Support this undertaking. * ; Applications for shares in the following form! may be-made to the Secretary, at his office,^ Switzer's Buildings, Princes-street, or-fo-»the"Solicitor, on or before 24th,day of December; on-whiel&day the lists -. will ba closed. - <; .
