POST-OFFICE OFFICIALS?
(J'o the Editor of the Otago Daily Times.) Sir, —I have frequently had reason to complain respecting our Post-office officials ; but a circumstance, has recently come urj.ier my notice which I deem worthy the consideration of yourself and readers.
If I am correctly informed, the clerks in the Dunedin Post-ofliee receive no remuneration whatever for work performed in after-hours ; now that the business of the Post-office has materially increased, this is really a serious consideration. Upon an average, I fiuppo.se at least some two or three times a week, it is necessary fur some of them to be there very late in the evening, or very early in the morning, varying from three to four hours—before or after the usual business hours—for which they receive no remuneration whatever ; contrary to the usual practice of the por-t-ollice authorities of our siiter colonies. In Victoria ami .Sydney, I understand, the clerks in the post-ofuee receive double pay for after-hours.
Sir, I think the least the General Government can do, is to allow some i enumeration for extra service thus rendered, whereby the public experiences convenience and receives benefit.
Should, however, the dilatory nature of the circumlofiuion office centred at Auckland, necessitate a delay of a couple of years' or so, before this matter can receive a due share of notice, 1 think the least that is expected from the Provincial Council at its next sit tiny, is to make provision for a due acknowledgment of services so rendered to the public I am, &c, Good News from Home. Dunedin, Nov. 24, 1862.
