SEAMAN'S ARTICLES.

{To the Editor of the Daily Times.)

Sir, —Observing- in your paper of the 25th ult, a paragraph headed " Seaman's Articles," and perceiving from the tenor of that letter, that great urnbmgc liiitl been taken in consequence of that Company nt either having been consulted, or employed iipoii that memorable oc^ac-ion ; all who have perused it must come to the conclusion, that, their infallibi ity is the only safe source any master of si ship ought to adopt lor safety, and accuracy in avoiding- any litigation. The purport of the letter appears to me, not to obtain possession of the agent's name., but to make patent to the mercantile community, that theiV (the Com pany's) establishment is A 1, letter first, their modus operandi being unimpeachable. I may, through your payer, inform L. and Company, who procured (not shipped) them, I having bad llie order from Captain May. Hence arose the cause of my stating, and, giving publicity to what I cons'clered unjust to a profession to which I belonged, and, served with credit, and distinction, for a period already stated. Readers of my letter in the paper of the 22nd ult., will observe that I was not biassed by either interested, nor disinterested motives, but had purely the welfare of the cause at heart that was advocated. But in the paragraph of the 25th, there appears something sarcastic, of the causes of which I have not. the remotest idea, but as the old adage is proverbially true, " Where ignorance 13 bliss, tis folly to be wise," I care not foi"the cause of the Company's letter, as it does not show any zeal, or good feeling to the community of which the writer's profession comprises a part, and parcel. Perhaps Mr Editor, you can inform me who this Company consists of, under the designated appellation of Leslie and Company. It is said that a Government official, not one hundrei miles distant from the New Jetty, is a partner, sleeping, or waking, I know not; or is it a personage whose official practice would not be acknowledged or countenanced as an authorised agent1? Allowing everything to remain in statit quo, and acting on the principle of " nothing extenuate or aught set down in malice."

I remain, &c, George Lujib. Shipping Agent, Jetty-street, Dunedin, 26th Nov., 16(32.
