The brig Jane, from Hobart Town, arrived in the forenoon, having sailed onthe lolh. She had strong gales ail the way, and, about 80 miles west of the Solander, was hove to for thirty-six hours. The Northern-Light entered out for Otago onthe 14th, and the Dart was loading up. From Capt. Gran?, we have files up to date. The ship Bruce was towed down this morning, bound for Melbourne. It is significant of the present attractions of the Otago diggings that, notwithstanding her merits as a passenger ship, she carried with-her only 25 passengers. The Queen, having received the English mail, sailed at noon, and tho Wonga Wonga, at 4 p.m., the latter vessel being advertised to proceed to the Manukau via Nelson jiud the ether to the Weat-Coast ports. The.Geelong, which steamed down along with the Queen, also left ior Lyttleton, taking with her a number of passengers for the intermediate ports-of Waikouati and Oamaru.

The report of the Victory having parted her chain and been driven back on the beach, proves to be too correct. _Mr Scott was just on the eve of a successful termination to his Jong and arduous labors when the accident occurred, which has thrown his operations so seriovs'y back. On Friday last the vessel was moved a-head several hundred yards, and was fairly afloat. Outside of her, however, was a small bank, and, until the tide should flow further, the work of heaving her off was btopped, and the furnaces were lit with the object of getting up steam, and bringing, the vessel at once round to Port Chalmers by her own power. This interval proved fatal to the immediate success of the scheme. The steam was up till it showed on the safety-valve, and everything looked hopeful, when the main chain, by which the vessel was hove out, snapped at the windlass: the vessel's head gradually veered round, and she now lies broadside on to the beach as before. It is satisfactory, however, that her position is now very different from her original one, by her being out a considerable distance, and it but requires promptitude, with Mr Scott's skill, to make, under ordinary circumstances, another jmd second attempt perfectly successful.

A correspondent in Scotland writes on 23rd September :—" New Zealand seems here to be, at present, the favorite fi3ld for emigration. The Ben Lomond sails from Glasgow in about ten days hence, and will be full. of passenger.-?. Some twenty-five young women to with her from one village in this this county (Caithness), besides a number of other emigrants of a useful class." paa reaK-sg3aa»a___«asßg S aai^^L3^^
