A Canaub.—We find the following paragraph in a French tiewspaper, vouched for by two names, Chavette and Calino:—"Tlie Emperor of Au tria recently met a soldier, in full uniform, wth one arm a»id accosted him thus :—• Where did you lose your arm]' 'At S.tlferino, Sire' Mis' Maj-sty at one-1 (leta-iio/l a decoration from his coat, and placed it hur.seu on the breast of the man. Such a sudden and unexpected reaonjpensc overw'nelmod the poor fellow as ra-iy be iciagir.el, who, trora»>iin{?,exclaimed, ' Ah' Sire ! this great (iecoratiou for the loss of but an arm i:i y-.-m- Majesty's service ! If I had lost two .' He was proceeding, perhaps, to say t'iat f'-e decoration woua] have b^en too bountiful, when the Emnsror remarked with p. smile. •' If you had lost both, 1 v»'(,uM hay* made you an officer.' In an instant the sdUlut drew his sword and cat off his remaiuinff arm.1' This is just a dish well seasoned to the taste of the French readers of the jour;i;il we allude to ;is f>e!iefited by this anecdote of Messrs ChaveUe a?id Calino. ancl, doubtless, the anecdote drew a larse amount of subscribers' tears. Less impressionable, and a little more mathematical, we of the British press would simply ask how the man could perform the feat of drawing his sabre with his remaining arm, and cutting off that remaining arm with that remaining sabre I— Court Journal.
