; The following letter has been addressed to us ppr favor of the Wellington Indcpmulent. in respect £ to the quotations ot the Wellington Cattle Market, ifurni-ihed to us by our own correspondent. It is right to say that, while giving insertion to this letter, •ft'e have every cosifidenee iv the (rood faith of our cirrr'spoadent, and that the remarks of " A Cattle Holder" must be simply taken for what they are worth :—

To the Editor of tint Otago Daily Times. Wellington, September 17th, 1802. Per favor of the WeUingtonlndcptindtr.it. Srß,—ln your is-ue of September 12tb, under the head " Commercial," I find the following:— Wellington, Sept. 8, 1802. In my last I indicated that the then prices of stock were not to be depended upon for more than a fortnight. The present state of the market fully justifies my remarks. The demand for cattle, fat or store, is brisk ; prices have risen, and have still an upward tendency. One gentleman, a late arrival from the south, brought up an order for 1000 header young stock/but will have to increase his oiler by some'so per cent., before; he will get them, though three months ago, the writer would have been very glad to have sold such a mob at his price. Purchasers from the North and South are aet'vely bidding against each other, but with the prob^biity of a still batter market at our own doors, by the supply'of the troops expected this year, to be introduced for road making, makes it difficult to buy at all. Of actual sales, I may mention a mixed lot of 450 head, sold by Ilhodes Sc Co., last week, v at £7 a-head, ea^li, deliverable at Wanganui—equal to £7 103. at Wellington; Sir, Now I can assure you that the above statement has caused the greatest astonishment here, I am largely interested iv the growth and sale or cattle, and shauld be delighted to witness the demand anjj consequent rise iv price your correspondent indicates. 1 certainly have heard of Rhode's & Co. selling a prim* lot, mostly bullockH, at about £7 per head, but the rest of your informant's statement is so' stooge and contrary to tacts, that there is an impression here, that you must have been hoaxed. We know nothing about troops coming to eat our beef—the demand for Auckland is felling off—and the 50 per cent, rise only exisfs in the imaginative brain of your versatile correspondent; but we do know that a gentleman, Mr. Bird, from Otago, came here'some time ago, a»nt liis agent up the country, and bought a mixed herd, ' consistingof bullocks, cows, steers and'heifer* (the latter "not calve*),; at £3: ss. per head on the run, but finding he could get plenty at £8 pet" head cm the run, he 'owered his price, and advertised to give only £2 ss. per hrad, delivered in Wellington, of course no one would look at the latter price. But 1. beg1 to inform you, Sir, and the Otago public,, that at the former prices there are plenty of cattle to be bought in this province. ; ? ' lam, Sir, Your's obediently, - -; - - i .-•■-,- A Cattm Homer.
