RULES OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Sir, —I beg to hand you below a draft of alterations proposed to be made iv the Rules of the Chamber of Commerce, which it is believed will bring them more into accordance with the views of a majority of the present members. Rules 1 to 3 as at present. 4, Candidates for admission shall be proposed by one member and seconded by another, at any of tbe ordinary, meetings of the Chamber, aud shall be bab lotted for at tlie next general or special meeting, and rejected if more than one-fourth ot those present vote against his admission.
Rules 5 to 7 ai at present. 8. The Reneral meetings of the Chamber shall be held on the second Friday in every month. 9. At the^gcneral meeting in September of each year, a Chairman and Deputy Chairman, and a Committee of six members shall be elected by ballot. The Chairman ami Deputy Chairman shall be ex-officio memberaof the Committee, five of whom shall form a quorum. Any member ofthe Chamber who may be dulyproposed and seconded, shall be eligible for the to offices.
10. A special orenersd meeting shall be called by the Chairman or deputy Cliairmaa, when the Committee shall deem it necessary, or on the requisition of five of the members of the Chamber, In which case it shall be held within seven days of .the--receipt'of'the requisition. These meetings shall be called by circular, ia wbicb tha business to be considered, shall be stated.
11. As at present. 12. The duties of the Commlttee'shall be—to transact generally tiie executive business of the Chamber, - - to bring before it all matters requiring lb* attention, —to carry out ite'resolutiona,—to take prompt action when necessary to further the objects of the Chamber m sttted in Rule 2,—and to present the general meet»ns? m September a financial statement, and a report of all circumstances affecting the trade and commerce of Otago, which way have transpired during the previous year.
13. Two Auditors shall be elected by the Chamber at the general meeting In September each year. a 11. Vacancies occurring in the Committee shall lie fined up by election in the usual form at the following monthly meeting. _ 15. A paid Secretary shall bo appointed by tho Committee, whose duties shall be a* inpnseat Rule* 15 and 16.
10. The Committee shall meet at least once In every month.J|Tbe Chairman, kc, as in pre*ent Rule 19.

At alt meetings of the Chamber.-at least 15 members must be present to constitute a meeting. 20 and 21 a» prcseut rules 25 aud 20. 22. No motion altering or adding to these Rules shall be submitted to any meeting of this Cbarat&r, unless notice shall have been riven at the previW monthly meeting. Similar notice must be giveoW all motions, wbich have for objects the definite expression of opinion on any matter of public jpolicy, but when emergency requires, a special general meeting may be called, for such a purpose, in the manner provided in Rule 10. Written notice of all business to be brought before any meeting, ihall ba posted by the Secretary ia the apsrtmenU ©coupled by the Chamber at least 7 days beforehand.
