Daily Times Office, Saturday Evening. There were no export entries for gold passed at the ("usUirn Hnuso to-dny. The ainonml of Customs Revenue collected at the Port of Duvifilin on Friday, the sth inst, was £301 ll.s. 3J. The reckless" manner in which "so many had started '• for the ■ newly "discovered divginjes has eventiiattd as could easily.be for*seen in the return of ioany" miners on account of the absolute want of provisions; but whilst thr-ir return is a k-ssoii to all Roinjr thither to make "preparation, we do not look uj>on the new ■ ground there 'oponcd up witli'loss eonfidfiice, in fact the reports hitherto to hand establish the likelihood of a considerable number of miners being profitably \ employed there, and another '.market for the consumption of imported merchandize be'm^' opened up. The escort this week from the Tuapeka district is a larger 6ne than has recently fceeti receive!, but this is readily accounted for by the. numbers of miners who have left this district havinj: parted with their I accumulated savings, in order to fit out for the new rash. For the next few weeks, and until a', settle.! population is ajrain at work on the older gold-fields, we must expect a much diminished yield therefrom. The news just to hand of the discovery of othe payable ground in this provinfo, near the Southland border, has caused some excitement—in fact, a plethora of pa\able gold-fields scums now thecondidition of Otago, and a large population i.'j the medicine wanted to turn tiiis wealth into active being. Doubtless we shall, have a considerable influx from Australia, and population, from whatever source, will be alike welcome, but we should greatly prefer beeing a free cinigntion from ti'.e teeminj; shores of Britain, rather than drain the laboring power from the neighboring colonies, where a great amount of settled prosperity exists. Our news from Melbourne is getting very old, and the arrival of the Gothenburg, now due, is anxiously looked for. The accident to the Aldiuga is particularly unfortunate at this time. There is no alteration in the value of merchandize that we can notice. The building trade panisularly is quiet, ami many .buildings are at a standstill for ] the want of laborers a.i'l mechanics. The ensuing week should be indicative, if the start generally expected is to be given to business. If the present fine weather continues, and favorable news is received from the Dunstan, ample supplies to meet the wants of the miners there will soon likely be forwarded.
