There has been an unusual number of arrivals at | Port Chalmers to day, several of the vessels being i laden with stock and other freight at present in demand. j The Airedale returned from the Bluff in the morn- i ing, after a short run. She reports that the Gothenhurg only passed the Bluff at 9 p.m., on the evening of the 18th, the wind having been stiff a-head throughout the passage down. The Shawmnt was now fairly afloat, and preparations were being made for her proceeding to sea ; the Airedale will probably sail on the 24th. The Brisk, from Wellington, shipped 40 head of cattle, but had a loss of nine; once during the passage she encountered heavy weather, but particularly off Bank's Peninsula on Monday last, when a heavy gale vis encountered and the vessel had to heave to. Thu W. B. Dean was to leave" Wellington or this port early. The Valiant *a!so with" cattle from Wellington, arrived without loss during the passage, though a few head died before departure. She encountered the same heavy gale as the Brisk, and bore up for Akaroa; but, while going under close reefed topsails, was met by a wind off the land, and has since had light Northerly winds. WLen the gale came on she was not many miles off the Heads; with a continuance of the first wind she had. she would have made the passage in less than thirty hours. The Martha and Ellen made a passage of fifteen days from.--Hobart Town. Experienced fine weather. Brings principally timber, with two horses. The wind and tide being favorable, she proceeded direct to town to discharge. The Mary Ann, previously reported, also went to town with the forenoon tide, preceded by the Picard, the other Hobart Town vessels.

The Ellen and' the Sornta'arrival opportunely with freights of coal for the supply, of tac steamers. The Sorata met with some heavy weather, and being baffled in an attempt to come through Cook's Straits, made the usual passage South. The Margaretha Roesner was loading when she sailed, and by advices received it was ascertained that that vessel sailed on the 6th. The Grecian Queen was to follow. The Annie returned from Oamaru, after discharging safely a cargo of coal. When she left, carpenters were a+work laying the ways for the floating of the Star of Tasmania, and an attempt was to be made to-day, to move her from her position. She lies broadside on the beach, about a cable's length above high water mark.

The Queen sailed at one o'clock with the English mails for the North. During her stay here, the crew, affected by general feeling to visit the diggings, struck work, their time being up ; but we believe their demands were so far satisfied, otherwise there might have been some difficulty in forwarding Her Majesty's Mails. Three of the port steamers went to Waikouaiti to-day, each with a number of passengers, about a hundred altogether. The City of Ilobart may be hourly expected. It was understood that she would not sail until the 18th, but according to some advices, her orders were to sail not later than the 16th, and it is probable she was not much behind the Aldinga.
