TTIREQUENT instances having occurred' of DeJP sertion from Her Majesty's Sea and Land Forces_ in this Colony, Notice is hereby given, that the most rigorous proceedings will be taken against any person enticing away, harboring, concealing, or employing Deserters. Natal Desertion. 10 and 11 Viet., chap. 62, sec. 11. And be it enacted, That every person who, by words or any other means whatsoever, shall persuade any person in Her Majesty's Navy to desert, or improperly absent himself from his dnty, sb.all forfeit and pay the sum of twenty pounds for every such act; and every person who shidl assist or procure any person in Her Majesty's Navy to desert, or improperly absent himself from his duty ; or shall couccal employ, or continue to employ any person belonging to Her Majesty's Navy, who shall be a deserter, or improperly absent from his duty, knowing him to be sucu adesertor, or so improperly absent, shall forfeit and pay the sum of thirty pounds for every such assistance, procurement, concealment, employment, or continuing of employment, as aforesaid.'' Marixe Desertion. 21 Viet., cap. 7, sec. 54. " Any person who shall, in any part of Her Majesy's dominions, by words or any other means whatsoever, directly or indirectly, procure any Marine to desert; or shall by words or by any other means whatsoever, attempt to procure or persuade any Marine to desert ,• and any person who, knowing that Marine is about to desert, shall aid or assist him in deserting; or, knowing any Marine to be a deserter, "hall conceal such deserter, or aid or assist such t'eserter in concealing himself, or aid or assist in his rescue, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall, on conviction thereof, be liable to be prinisihed by . fine or imprisonment, or both, as the Coert beiore which suet conviction shall take place . may adjudge. Terms :—For the usual course of education for the three upper classes, £9 per annum ; for the three lower classes, £8 per annum; Drawing and Music, extra. Every pupil must be upwards of nine years of age, able to read fluently, and write from dictation, and know the first four rules of arithmetic. "VTELSON COLLEGE. —The first Election of I JLI Scholars will take place on Monday, the 29 th "September, in the present year. Three Scholarships will be offered for competition one Foundation Scholarship of the annual value of £30, tenable for two years, to which all students at the College,- wheresoever born or resident, who shall not have attained the age of eighteen at the above date, are admissible ; the Alfred Fell Scholarship, of the annual value of £20, tenable for two years, to ■which all boys -under fifteen at the above date are admissible; and one Foundation Scholarship of £10 for •ne year, to which stadents in the junior school only are admissible. The names of candidates, together with certificates o their age, must be sent in to the Principal at any time not later than the 22nd of September. Candidates must attend in person at the College, on Wed-1 nesday, the 24th of September, at 0-30, a.m., to be i examined on that and the following days. j Subjects of Examination. Candidates for the first Scholarship will be ex amined in Scripture History, Geography, Arithmetic, I and in writing English from. Dictation: those who pass a satisfactory examination in those subjects will h% further examined in—1. Latin and Greek Grammar. ■ • 2. Cicero, the Catiline Orations, 1., 11. 8. Xenophon's Anabasis, Book I. 4. Algebra, as far as Quadratic Equations 5. Euclid, Books 1., HI. 6. Roman History to the end of the Punic wars • 7. Greek History to the end of the Persian wars • 8, English History. 9. French Grammar, translation from English into French, and from French into English. Candidates for the second Scholarship will be examined in Scripture History, Geography,; Arithmetic, ■writing English from Dictation, Latin Grammar, Jacob* Latin Reader, Eutropius, and English Hia- • tory. Candidates for the third' Scholarship will be examined in Scripture History, Geography, writing Euglieh from Dictation, Latin Accidence, English History and Arithmetic. The Scholarships will be awarded .to the three boys who do ..best ia the three several examinations. On the Ist of Jifav, 1863, five Scholarships will be offered for competition, viz., two Foundation Scholarships of °£2S and £10 respectively, the Stafford Scholarship of £28, the Richmond Scholarship * £30, and the Newcome Scholarship of £30.
