RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, FRIDAY, JUNE 27TH, 1862.

Before Alfred Chetham Strode. Esq., E.M.; John Chapman, Esq., J. P.; Lloyd, Esq., J.P.; and Charles Logie, Esq., J. P. James Roach was charged by Constable Baker with having broken into a tent and destroyed several articles therein. The accused had represented himself as a constable. There not being sufficient evidence to warrant a conviction, the prisoner was discharged. Application fob Licenses.—William Meluish, whose case had been adjourned from last meeting, applied for a general license. Mr. Cook appeared in support of the application. Mr. Inspector Weldon stated that he had examined the house, situated at the corner of the Octagon, and found it was not completed, but would be finished in about a fortnight. Mr. Cook observed, that his client would be willing to allow the license to be held over until the completion of the house. Mr. Weldon thought it. would be desirable that the proprietor of a licensed house should always reside on the premises, instead of appointing a manager and living away. Th Bench observed that such would be a "sine qua non ' in all future applications. Mr. Meluisb. was granted a 12 o'clock license. In the application of Thomas Little, of the Exchange Hotel, the Commissioner of Police and Mr. Weldon spoke in favor of the applicant, who was accordingly granted a 12 o'clock license. John M'Cubbin was granted a 12 o'clock license. Simon Ross, of the Melbourne Hotel, was granted a 12 o'clock license. John Crawford, of the Glasgow Arms, was granted a 12 o'clock license. John Hall was granted a 10 o' clock license. J. B. Smith, of the Shakspeare Hotel, was granted a 12 o'clock license. Sly Gkog Selling.—Thos. S. Downs and George Kingston, were charged upon the information of Lowe, the informer, with illicit dealing in spirits. Information withdrawn. ; Gobso v. Aldridgb.—The Bench gave judgment in this case for the plaintiff, in the sum of £112s. and costs.
