THE NEW RUSH AT HAMILTON" AND WAYNE'S STATION.
We have been kindly furnished with some reliable information respecting the new rush near Highlay, to which we have, on a former occasion, made a brief allusion; and we at once proceed to lay the substance of it before our readers. ■■'
The place: is called Stoneburn Gully, and is situate at the head of the Waikouaiti River, on the station of Messrs. Hamilton and Wayne, about twelve miles from their home station.. There were, when our informant visited the spot, about a hundred and fifty miners on the ground, with; about forty tent", two stores, and a bakery in? course of erection. In addition to the men living on the spot there are many from Deep Dell, Timbrell's, and Waipori visiting it. The, gully is from eight to'nine miles in length, running east and west, the ranges slope gently towards the foot of the gully. In one part there is afiat'of from forty, to fifty acres, and it is there that most of the miners are at work. The sinking is shallow, from three to five feet. Our informant saw several prospects tried. The gold was fine; one party washed out tvyo pennyweights and a half from five buckets full of wash dirt. Nobody had begun sluicing, indeed they had not been long enough on the ground to have been able to get to work at that sort of mining. Our informant was not able to learn anything very definite, as to the. prospect of the field turning out a payable one, as the miners generally told him that they could not form a positive opinion until they began to sluice. The country around has a very promising appearance, and our informant considered that the indications were such as to warrant the opinion that a good gold field exists there. Fuel it appears is very scarce, Toniatagora scrub being the only thing to be had for firing in some of the small gullies. "
The road from Hamilton & Wayne's home station to the diggings is very good, as there is a leading range which can be followed to the very spot where the miners are at work.
