The Company's Engineer, during his stay in Dunedin, has been enabled from personal observation to arrive at accurate details of the necessary expenditure ; and it. has been ascertained that Ihe works contemplated can be completed and placed in active operation for a sum within the proposed cnpital of £15,000, aud within a period of from three to four months from the time of completing the necessary preliminary arrangements. The great and permanent improvement to trade and town property which will be realized by the establishment of this Company has been fully recognised from the fact that upwards of one-third of the capital has been subscribed within a few days; and as an early allotment of shares wi'l take place* persons who ma 3' be desirous of becoming shareholders arc requested to make application for shares without delay, as it is confidently expected that the Share List will be filled up in the course of another week. The proposed course of lighting will be Georgestreet, Jail-street, Princes-street, Jetty-street. Jlanse-street, the Arcade, Hope-street, and portions of Walker street, SiaftbrU-street, High-street, Rattraystreet, and Maclaggan-street; and no doubt can exist as to the highly profitable returns which will be secured from the manufacturing operations of this Company, in proof of which it may be mentioned, that on the main pipes of the most important and prosperous Ga* Company in. the Colonies there is only an average of 35 consumers to the mile of main laid down ; whereas, in Dunedin, the average will be about 100 consumers to the mile; it may therefore be confidently anticipated that a return of £15 per cent on the capital invested will he realised, after ample provision has been made to provide for repairs, and all contingencies. The necessary permission to lay down pipes through the streets has already been obtained from the Town Board ; a period of six weeks will intervene between the calls of £1 each, 01 which due notice will be given. Upwards of 2000 volumes are on the way out from England ; aud it is expected that within twelve mouths nearly 4000 volumes of carefully selected and standard works will be available for the use of the members. Arrangements have also been made for receiving per mail, as pnbliiihed, all new works of interest. THE READING ROOM will be supplied with the following :— Quahteblies. —The Edinburgh, Westminster, Quarterly, North British, and National Reviews. MAGAZINE 3 AND OTHEK PERIODICALS.—BIackwood, Frazer, Coruhill, Dublin University, Macraillun's, and Mechanics' Magazines. Art Journal, Ather.seum, Chambers' Journal, Once a Week, All the Year Round. Illustrated London News, Punch, L'lllustration. Saturday Review, Examiner, Economist, Home News, European Times. Colonial Newspapers.—The Otago, Canterbury, Wellington, and Auckland papers. Melbourne Argus, Herald, Age, and Journal of Commerce. Sydney Herald, and Empire. South Australian Advertiser. Hobart Town Mercury. Members will have the privilege of obtainiOg free admission to the Reading Room, for one month in every year, for any person being a non-resident or the captain of any vessel trading to the Port.
