ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of the Daily Times.
Sin.—At half-nast three o'clock on Saturday niorninu', the 31st ultimo; as Sargaant Sheri lan, in company with one of bis men, we're patrolling on the Waitaiuma l)i<«inss. their attt-.ition was attracted by the mournful cries "of two nien, who, it appears, had strayed from their proper p:ith amongst the gold dig-'.'j'.-s' shafts, into one of which (of considerable depth)thov inihappily fell. But, thanks to the timely assistance lviulerod by the sergeant, they were rescued from drowning ; one of them having twice sunk, and w; s a third time sinking, when he was caught, and thus saved from the grasp of death by the hand ot the sffrceant. And thus'we r,ee that the lives of those two im'lurtunate men were saved by the unremitting attention of the police. Such humane service is surely deserving the highest commendation, and cannot fail to draw forth public admiration. The public are well acquainted with tlie various services that have been performed by the police of 'Otigo, and doubtless the authorities will admit that it reflects the highest credit upon their choice of a commissioner. ' It is to be hoped that ere long the Government will take such steps as will lead to the formation :of n Humane Society, whereby such really praiseworthy conduct as we see here recorded would meet its proper reward ; doubting not, at the same time, that the authorities will not allow such services to pass unr'quitecl. 1-1 oping that I have not intruded too largely upon your space, I beg to'remain. Sir, Yours, &c, A Subscriber. Waitaltu'na Dig.^in'43, June 2nd, 1362."
