We have no Nelson papers, hut from the Wellington Independent of the 27th, we learn that, at tho request of a number of gentlemen, his Honor the Superintendent had convened a public meeting of the inhabitants of Nelson, for Wednesday, the 28th inst., to take into consideration what steps it is desirable to take in anticipation of the arrival of his Excellency Sit- George Grey. Mr. Burnett, Colliery Engineer, has sent in a Report on the West Coast coal-fields to the Provincial Government. The report is highly favorable, and proves the existence of extensive and valuable coalfields on the West Coast. Mr. Burnett, in speaking of the Buller coal-field, remarks: —"Part of the j Bailor coal-field is situated on the elevated table land to the north of Mount Roc'ifort. I say part of it, because at present I am not prepared to say how far it extends in any direction ; but this I can say —that the whole of the table land (many thousand acres in extent) is a very rich coal-field, containing a great number of workable seams similar in quality to the Grey caal, aud which can be worked, I think, at less expense.". A tramway from the mine to the port is ensv of construction, tho length would be about twelve miles, and the difficulties are by no means so great as those overcome by the Dun Mountain Railway. Tiie Buller harbour can be used hy ordinary vessels of 200 tons, and by 300 ton vessels built for that purpose. The following is an abstract of, the " Probable Revenue of the Province of Nelson, for the year commencing Ist April, 1563": — £ s. d. These sheep had beon,.ordered, ye believe, by one of our flockowncrs, to get a change of blood, and to improve uenerally the character of his flock. The-Grey Coat-.—By the last steamer from Auckland, a despatch was received by his Honor the Superintendent from Mr. Fox, the Colonial Secretary, enclosing reports made by certain tradesmen in Auckland upon a sample of l-he Grey coal which had been given them to test. Messrs. Vickery and Mansfield, of the Albert Foundry, say : —" We have takeu every opportunity of trying thu coal sent us, and find it to be of a very superior quality, and a good coal for getting steam. It givt-s a great heat where there is a proper draught, burns quick, and gives a clear and full fire, with little smoke. It leaves clean fire-bars, is free from eHnkers, and does not require much j-tirring, burning to a white ash." Mr. Davidson, coach-builder, horse-shoer, &c, says :—" I beg to inform you that I have fjiveu the Nelson coals that you scut me a fair trial in my forges, and I consider them a good'sample of smithy coals, and if they could be got at a reasonable price, I have no doubt they would be in demand." Mr. Edward Wall says :—" I beg to state, for the information of the Colonial Secretary, that the sainole of Nelson coal sent by him for trial is the best New Zealand coal which has come to my notice ; the fault with them is that they are too light, but they do not leave any clinkers. I consider th'eni to bo better than any of the New South Wales coal, with the exception of the Walls End coal." The Lachlan. —Mr. Clemesha, of Ballarat, has just returned to that town from the Lachlan. He frfves to the Star a not very encouraging account of the place. Tliero are 22,000 people here. Out of the whole number of persons on the ground, it is generally agreed that not more than from 450 to 500 are getting (?olcl, so that it -will be seen that new comers would at present have a small chance. The ■whole of the leads are worked on the. frontage system, and therefore the chances of pushing in would be very slight. In a business point of view the place is decidedly overdone. Tho whole of the available sires for stores have been taken up and are held for business purposes, or as a matter of speculation, and very high prices arc demanded. If the prospecting parties should strike gold, the place will undoubtedly be much improved; but at present there is no chance for a new speculation, as a largo number of miners will not be able to stay out the length of time required to see the results of the works now being'carried on. Board enn be obtained for from £1 to £1 ss. per week, but horse feed is very high, hay being £30 per ton ; oats, 18s. per bushel; and maize, 10s. per bushel. When the wet weather sets in, and it probably has by this time, communication with Sydney will be almost cut off, and everything will rise very greatly in price, and continue dear during the winter.
