Knowing your generous assistance is at all times given to any movement, calculated to~proniote the welfare of society, we shall be glad of your help. (By order ofthe Committee), Asiy. The gentleman who has kindly proffered one hundred pounds fbr the best treatise on the "Importance aud Neces-sity.of the Separation of the South from the Northern Island," has generously placed a like sum in the'hauds of the Town Board "of Dunedin, forthe best treatise on the "Chemical Properties ofthe Mud in' Manse, Sliifford, Walker, or other Streets." ■ firCOHOiSt'toTs are not limited to..fJie.se_o3__any parti-curarstrccry-TO.-,^ —_—1„^. ti^u which may present the greatest facility for their researches. ' The subject must be treated of underthe following heads:— ■ Ist. —Its origin. 2nd.—lts chemical properties. 3rd.—Whether its effects are beneficial or otherwise on society. 4th—lts attraction for, or repulsion of, well-broken three-inch metal. , sth.—Whetlu-r the business of the Hospital and Cemetery are likely to be injuriously affected by its removal. All the treatise must be written in a plain, legible hand. '.■'■'', All ornamental display of colored inks is to be avoided, as none will be recognised unless executed with a broom not less than two feet broad, dipped in Dunedin Shoe Polish. The merits of the treatises will be decided upon, and all inform titiou relating thereto, obtained at the Mud Committke Office, Stafford-street. N.B. Wanted an active Secretary with wheelbarI row, scraper and broom, to whom a , liberal salary will be given. Immediate application, ..with testimonials of ability, is absolutely necessary. As the objects of the Committee cannot be -accomplished without considerable expense, voluntary contributions, of not less than sixpence, are earnestly solicited.
