CANTERBURY.
(From the Lyttelton Times. May 7.)
The Provincial Council elections. are now drawing to a close ; the most important one, that for Christcliiu'ch, commences to-day, and, the p.oll wil| be taken to-morrow, It is the only one where anything like a atirring contest will he experienced. There are at present seven candidates for the four seats, and it is thought likely there will he one, if not two, changes in' the representation of the city. 'We don't profess to know this, mid can only hope that the best men may lie foremost. '
The Homkward English Mail. —As the Airedale is not expected in Lyttelton before the 16th inst., and the Melbourne boat"leaves Otago on the 17th, it has hesn judged prudent to despatch the s.s. Maid of the Yaria with the. Canterbury homew;u'(l mdil on the 14th. We'iintlerstjuid, tW'efoWtimt the English mnil will close on the 13th or 14th; though no official intimation has yet been received from the Post Office on the subject. We hear that an accident occurred to Mr. Drans.fieW, while crossing the river Ashley on .Saturday last, which narrowly escaped being attended with fatal consequences Mr. Wrarisfield was driving a dog-cart, in which were Mrs. AVorinald and daughter, when, owing to the horse losing his footing from the strength of the current, -the cart was upset, and the Whole precipitated into deep water. Fortunately, no lives were lost, except that of the horse, but everything contained in the cart was lost. \Ve are informed that the governing body of the college decided at its last meeting to send to England for a competent master to undertake the English department of the grammar school in its elementary branches, and in the ineo.ntinie to mak'e.-teni[p,ora.ry-arrangements.
A Whole Family Suffocated.—A most distressing occurrence took place at Cardiff on Monday morning, causing the death of four persons. A man named Patrick Cnnnell, residing in a back house in Ellen street, New-tnwn, Carditfj together with his wife and two children, were found dead in their beds. It appears that on Sunday night, the weather being exceedingly cold, and there being no fire-place in their sleeping apartment, they kindled a quantity of coal in a tin pitcher, which they placed in the room before they went to bed. On Monday morning they were discovered dead in their bed by some of the neighbors, and medical aid was procured, but no sign of life wi!3 apparent in either case. Tiie man was 40 year old, and his wife 25 years, the daughter 2J years and an iufant boy only 10 days old. An inquest was held on Monday evening, before Mr. R. L. Boss, the coroner of the county, and a -verdict of." Died by suffocation by inhaling carbonic acid gas", was returned. — Despatch,
