VICTORIA.

We extract the following from late Victorian papers:— ■ ■ - ■• .'...• Boiler Explosion and Loss op Life at Malmsburt Flour Mills. —On-Good-Friday morning, about six o'clock, the inhabitants of Malrnsbury were alarmed by what appeared to be an earthquake rendjng-the very air. On hastening to the place from which the fearful noise came, they found that the large, boiler of the mill belonging to Messrs. Blyth Brothers had exploded, killing two men who were engaged about the engine, and scalding $wo p.thers ( whose recovery is doubtful. Qhe ,side of the building was oompletely blown out. Mr. Blyth, and others wljp kindly lent a hand, were busily engaged filling wheat into sacks, and removing from the debris every, available article into, other rooms of the building, no apprehension heing entertained of further damage, when, to the astonishment of all, about 6 p.m., a volume of black smoke issued from the interior of the mill, which it was then found, was on fire Every attempt to extinguish the flames was futile; i.i a few minutes the pillars and upper floors were seen burning; the fire soon reached the rafters of tbe roof, all the machinery became red hot, and the whole mass, roof," floors, and machinery, fell with a tremendous crash—the destruction feeing complete. This magnificent building,'which but a few months ago cost the owners so large a sum, and bid fair to be of lasting benefit to the farmers of Green Hill and Jim Crow road, aod graced the township of Malmcsbury, is now one heap of ruins. We learn that the mill and stock were insured to the amount of £10,000. An inquest was held upon the bodies of the deceased men on Saturday and a verdict of accidental death was returned. They were buried yesterday.— M. A. Mail^ 21st. April. Mr. Duffy HoMKSicifi^r.lt' 'is currently, reported that Mr, Duffy, rs soon as he obtains bis pension, will return home to Ireland. His ambition is to have ■ a seat in the British House of Commons, ns he is by no means reconciled to spend the remainder of his (lays in' Victoria, playing- second fiddle to tbe member for Kilmore, which he has hitherto been forced to do_ much against bis will. We are led to believe there is much truth in this report, ajid that any obstnq'es which stand in the w^y will bje remo/ed. — iiti^rat Tribute. - , '4n'otubb Explosion ih a 'Flour Mill.—On Tuesday night, about nine o'clock, t;he boiler of the f|onr mills of Mr. Johnston, at Coghill's Creek, burst with tremendous force, and was thrown a distance of some sixty yards by the force qf the explosion. r The engine house was completaly destroyed, but the mill itself Bi»fje;ad no injury. The attention of the day man had been drawn to an extraordinary pressure" of steam, and he was in the act of raising thevalvejwhen the explosion occurred. ( He was severely injured about the head and-shoulders and received severe scalds on various parts of the body, and is not expected to recover. The explosion is attributed to the want of a proper quantity of water in' the boiler.—B«Zlarut Star, April 21. A Chinese, but not a Celestially Happy Ma rri a be.- Yesterday morning, in the District Police Court, a good-looking girl, who stated b,er qge to be only fifteen years, made rnth,er a curious appljcatjon to fli'e poiipe magistrate, Mr. M'Lachlan She stated" tliat qn Monday last sjie had been united at Casflemnine to a Chinaman, named A'Tey, a well-to-do storekeeper nt; Jackass Flat, Bendigo, but, had barely been fixed in Hymen's fetters with the China man when she ropented of her bargain, and 'now applied to the police magistrate For a dissolution of the partnership, being under the impression that he had '" tbepower to bind and to loose." in all cases of marriage, as t)ie lawful guardian of minors; After some clo«.e questioning from Mr. M'Lachlan; the fair applicant admitted that she bad been living in the Chinese encampment for three months before her marriage with a lady there who did not bear an irreproachable character for morality, and the magistrate, in dismissing the girl, told her he could not assist her. She left the court evidently idealising; the old homely adage of ''marrying in haste: and repentingat leisure.'' — JEtendigo Advertiser, 18th April. . ■■' ■■■■'■';.■■•' "■>" Serious Mining Ac£ipisi{t.—An acoident of a very serious tiattW occurred i\t tlie Nelson Corap.iiny's plairii, at Sebastopol, on/Friday evening last. It appeals one of the shifts were down, blasting the reef in the drive, and from some unascertained cause the powder ignited. One of the men received frightful scalp wounds, and the other two will, in all probability, lose their sight. Dr. Kenwonhy was called in to the sufferers'nid.— Ballarat Tribune, April 21. Howitt"s Party.—From Adelaide we have our files to the 25th inst. The Register- says \-±" Despatches to Cooper's Creek, for \tti.v. ljowltt, from the Victorian Exploration Committee, were forwarded fcy'thts Government on Monday last.. They, trillbe conveyed from the out-stations by Corporal AYauehpp and another police-trooper, who will take with them two pack-horses in addition to their own, and it is expected thafthey will not be more than three weeks in arriving at their destination."— Argus. " The third session of the second Parliament of South Australia'opened to-day at noon, under. Sir Dominic Daly, whose speech embraced no topic of unusual prominence. The House adjourned until Tuesday, when the Estimates will be laid on the table, and then an adjournment will be moved over' the period required for elections to the six vacant.neat*.
