TOWN BOARD.
A Meeting of this body took place in the office, Princes-Ktreot, yesterday "afternoon at 4 o'clock ; Mr. Hardy in the chair. The minutes of the former proceedings were read and confirmed. Thefollowing letter from his Honor, the Superintendent was read.
• Superintendent's Office, Dunedin, May 9, 1562. Sin—With reference to the.resolution adopted by the Town Board dated 21st .May, I have the honor to acquaint you, for the information of that Body, that the tJovormnent have placed on the estimates the sum of £2000 as a grant in aid of the construction and maintenance of a main road through Dunedin. This sum, however, will \>e subject to a proportionate reduction with other sums which hajre been granted for works of so important a nature should it appear necessary and expedient to the Government. It was decided to thank the Government, and the Town clerk was authorised to apply for the amount to be placed to the credit of the Town Board.
The ibllowinir letter was read from the .Manager of the Union Bank:— ■
Union Bunk of Australin, Dunalin, 7th Hay 18G2. To the Town Board of Dnnedin, " Gentlemen—l have to call your nttentlon to 'the fact, that in entering upon the ground belonging to me, as Maunder of the Union Bank of Australia, and placing therein a pipe to the spring rising on that property, without ray consent, you are thereby committing a trespass on the Bank property. There U no d&ire on my part to prevent the town living the use of the water from that sping, so long as is distinctly understood, and acknowledged that these operations of the Board are purely on sufferance, and not of right, and that no right is thereby claimed at any future time to enter upon these lands, for repairing pipes, or other purposes, without the Bank's consent, aud that no interference is claimed with the Bank's iull right to use and enjoy the said spring upon their own ground. Upon receiving the written acknowledgment of the Board to the above cifect, no obstacle will bo placed in the way or their present operation; bnt un:less such be given at once. I must take the usual step 3 to protect the interests of the Bank in reference to their property. As the works are now proceeding, the: immediate reply of the Board to this communication will be necessary. In making this communication I act under the opinion of our legal adviser. (Signed) J. Jackson, Manager. The Ciiairmas observed that the Town Beard did. not make any claim upon the property. The conditions were agreed to. ■ ' A letter .was read from a party named D'Arcy, t inquiring if it was the intention of the Town Boanl to make any alteration in the present level of Highstreet.
The Clerk intimated that there was no alteration contemplated, at present, in the level of High-street boyond that already adopted. The following resolutions were adopted:— "1. That the Clerk be instructed to advertise as vacant the situation of Inspector of the Town Board works."
"2. That the main road from Mount Napier, through the swamp to the boundary of the town belt, be immediately repaired." "3. That Messrs. Ilulme, Switzer, Mollison, and the Clerk, be empowered to inspect Pitt and Elan streets, — previous to accepting tenders for several improvements, as no doubt a better gradient can be obtained." The Chairman asked what amount of subscription had been received on account of the formation of Cumberland-street.
The Clerk replied that no list had been sent" in to the Board, anil the only party who had subscribed was Mr. Bellamy. . . - The Chairman observed that he was desirous that the matter should not'drop through.. £50 had-been... promised, and Air. Bellamy was the only person wh.o had paid. It was re solycd that a committee be appointed to consider the ground reqiijred for public purposes ; and that the said committee consist of Messrs. Iluline, Shand,' Hardy, and the mover. "' ' The meeting terminated at half-past 5 o'clock.
The undermentioned accounts w-ero passed :—Park and Curio, L'J 19d. 81. ; Jlaurice Joel, L 4 10s. ; George Green for lowering Iho foundation of house in Princes-street, L 97 45,, 10-ss LlO for detention of building four weeks; Hohert Muir,'L63. The meeting adjourned to this day week, Monday 19th currant.
