FREQUENT instances having occurred of De- , sertion from Her Majesty s Sea and Land Forces in this Colony, Notice is hereby given, that the most rigorous proceedings will be taken against any person enticing away, harboring, concealing, or employing Deserters. The enactments relating to the above offence are subjoined for information. FRANCIS D. FENTON, ''.'. Assistant Law Officer. CLAUSES OF IMPERIAL ACTS RELATING TO DESERTERS. Naval DESBKTiex. 10 and 11 Viet., chap. 62, sec. 11. "And be it enacted, That every person trho, by words otany other means whatsoever, shall persuade any person in Her Majesty's Navy to desert, or improperly absent himself from his duty, shall forfeit and pay the sum of twenty pounds for every such act; and every person who shall assist or procure any person in Her Majesty's. Navy to deEert, or improperly absent himself from his duty ; or shall conceal, employ, or continue toeniploy any person: belonging to Her Majesty's Navy, who shall be a deserter, or improperly absent from his duty, knowing him to be such a desertor, or so improperly absent, shall forfeit and pay the sum of thirty pounds for every such assistance, procurement, concealment, employment, or continuing of employment, as aforesaid." " Any person who shall, in any part of Her Majes" tvs dominions, by words or any other means whatsoever, directly or indirectly, procure any Mamie to desert; or shall by words or by any other means whatsoever, attempt to procure or persuade any Marine to desert; and any person who, knowing that Marine is about to desert, shall aid or assist him in deserting.; or, knowing any Marine to be a deserter, shall conceal such deserter, ■or aid or assist such deserter in concealing himself, or aid or nssist in his rescue, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall, on conviction thereof, be liable to be puniihed by fine or imprisonment,, or both, as the Court'before which such conviction shall take place may adjudge." REGULATIONS . rpji the DISPOSAL, SALE, LETTING AND OCCUPATION OF THE YASTE LANDS O3? THE--OBOWJ 1IH THE PROVINCE OF CANTERBURY: AS AMENDED. I. A IX Regulations now in force in the ProJ\ vince of Canterbury for the sale, letting, disposal, and occupation of the Waste Lands of the Crown are hereby repealed. 2. All such Waste Lands shall, from and after the day on which these Regulations shall come into force, be sold, let, disposed of, and occupied according to these Regulations, and not otherwise. 3. Every Act which the Superintendent is hereby authorised or required to perform he shall perform solely in accordance with the advice of his Executive Council for the time being, and such advice shall be recorded on the minutes of the Council. , II. —THE WASTE LAIJDS BOARD. 4. There shall be established a Board to be called the Waste Lands Board, to consist of one Chief Commissioner, and of not less than two nor more than five other Commissioners, all of whom (except such one as* shall be appointed to act as Treasurer) shall be appointed and lie removable by warrant under the hand of the Superintendent. , 5. One member of "tlic-Waste Lands Board shall also he the Treasurer thereof, ~&n&.su C h member shall., be appointed and removable by the Govotoqj.. 6. The Waste Lands Board shall sit at the pn^oipjii Land Office of the Province, at certain stated timesr tohe determined by the Superintendent, and shall also sit for special purposes at such places and at such times as the Superintendent shall direct; of which sitting* due nptice shall be given in the Provincial Government Gazette, and one or more newspapers published in the Province. 7. The Chief Commissioner when present, and in his absence then some member selected by those present at any meeting of the Board, shall preside thereat, and elian have a casting vote in all questions coming before the Board. ,-.,i'\: 8 All questions coming before the Board shall oe decided by a majority.of the Commissioners present ' O^All meetings of the Board shall be attended by «t least tlu-ee Commissioners, and shall be open to the PU 10 CAH applications for Land and for Pasturage and for Timber Licenses shall, after hearing evidence when necessary, be determined by the Board at some ""l^lifßoard shall have power to hear and termine all disputes between the holders of Pasturage and Timber Licenses respecting the boundaries of runs nnd districts, and shall have and exercise a the powers which may be lawfully had wd exercised by any Commissioner of Crown Lands, under the provisions of the "Crown Lands Ordinance, Suss. A., No. 1 :" and the " Crown Lands Extension Ordinance, Sess. XI., No. 10." . 12. All the routine business of the Land Department shall be transacted by the Chief Commissioner, subject to s,uch regulations as may be made by the Board in that behalf. ' - 13. A book to be called the " Application Book" shall be kept open during office hours at the Land Office, in which the name of every person desiring to make any application to the Board shall be written in order l>y himself or- any person duly authorised on is °behalf.
