TOWN BOARD,
A meeting of this body took place yesterday, at the 1 o ftices. in 4 Princes-street. Present, Messrs. Shand ! (chairman), Jenkhison, Hardy, Graham, and Dr. 1 Hulme. The minutes of last meeting- were read, and con--1 tinned. '■-,-' A letter was read from Lambert & Co., of the Colonist office, inquiring if the Board would rcimt burse the expense of removing earth fiom the footpath ' opposite to those premises. It was resolved that the Board_ refund the expensey providing that the cost shall not exceed ls. Od. per i I cubic yard. An application from Thomas Murray, for leave to 'io put an iion pipe across Regent-street, was adjourned to next meeting. » ' A letter was i end from Thomas Birch relative to the-' • construction ot footpaths in Moray-street, aud it was i icsolved that the Clerk be instructed to examine the ' -. plane, and report at the next meeting. ' A letter was read from Alain & Co., offering to put in oue-third more over £ I 10s. per chain for gravel--1 ing 'Albany-street. The Board declined the proposal, ) deciding upon proceeding- with the woik according to | the original contract. I A letter was read from Mr. G. L. Wilson, enquiring whether the pump in Stewart-street, opposite tht ' gaol, was pubhc or private property, as a gentleiuaii 1 living opposite had removed the haudle. : Dr. liiilme obscrverved that the pump was public ; property, to all intents and purposes, as it had been . put uji by Government. The Clerk si jd Mr. Monson had taken away the ihe handle, and excused himself hy stating-, that lit had got permission to remove it under certain coudi- : tions; he had applied to the -Government since, and ' had obtained leave to do with it what he pleased. ' It was resolved to address the .Government on the '■ subject. ,- j A letter was read from Messrs. "W. H. Hassell & Co., wherein the writers declined -to pay ior metaling the road below the Athenoeum, but they were .' prepared to pay ±150 towards that object, provided, (he road were made fi-om the Athenamm, and con-'' tinued up the hill, as far as the means would allow. \ It was resolved that the work be proceeded with, '.. and that the metalling' commence with the Arcade and extend upwards. It was resolved that George-street be levelled to the full width from Moray place to Frederick-street, ami that tenders be called for the formation of gravel foot- ~ paths along each side of George-street, from Mora} place to Frederick-street, the cost_ to be charged to . the proprietors in terms'of the. ordinance. ~.' , It was resolved that tenders be called for clearing away the earth at the north side of Stafford-street, i preparatory to laying the footpaths. 'ihe Clerk was instructed to ascertain the expense of erecting lamps in the town, and the contingent cost of attending io them. ' •■ An application was read froru-Jitr. John Fennie for an appointment of overseer of public works undei the Board.
Mr. Graham stated that the applicant had, duringl the day, called upon Mr. Gillies and himself; ami, from his statements, as well as testimonials, he appeared to be a most eligible man. It was then resolved, on the motion of Dr. Hulme. that an overseer of public works should be engaged : .md the Clerk having reported that Mr. Feunie was in attendance, his certificates were obtained from him with a view to inspection. The documents were procured and read aloud by Mr. Graham.
The testimonials being pronounced satisfactory, it was resolved that Mr. Fennie should be employed for three months on a salary uot exceding the rate of £150 per annum. The tender of Mr. Greenlaw to construct a footpath' in Duncan-street for £117, to be completed witliin one month, was accepted. At ten minutes before six o'clock, the Board axljourncd to Monday next, the 21st current.
