BANKKRS : BANK OF KEW ZEALAND. ' solicitor: S. M. SOUTH. BKCRKTARY : 1 MR. JAMES. W. HAY. ' nnHE rapid increase of population, consequent upon J_ the influx of people to tins Province, through the discovery of the Gold Fields, has necessarily caused the erection of a vast number of. buildings, and has also increased the stocks, of merchandise to a degiee hitheito unparalleled in the city of Dunedm. Notwithstanding this rapid increase of -valuable pro- ' perty—thereby causing an enormous 'outlay 'of capital —no facilities have been afforded, further thati those existing previous to the discovery of the Gold* Fields, so as to enable merchants and oriiers to secure themselves against loss by flre ; and it may be safely stated that'the existing Insurance Offices, in Duneain have not the power to insure one-tenth of the property in this city.' At the same time, owing to the crowded state of some portions of Dnnedin, and the total want of proper appliances for the extinguishing of fires, great anxiety is, universally felt, so much so that every person would be glad to insure, and be williug to pay iuch rates as muit handsomely remunerate an insurance Company. .Without going- into statistical, "details, it ."will be patent to the minds of all observers" that there is at present in Dnnedin .property wortlt immense sums of money, insured at a rate totally inconsistent, with its actual value, to say nothing of the many lioises uninsured, through the present Fire Agents having no power to increase the number of their policies—a result consequent npon the exhaustion of the amount of capital which the European and Australasian Companies have authorised them to invest here. ■ Under these circumstances, it ia'proposed £o form a Company under the abo\e title, for the purpose of insuring against losses by fire, with a capital of one hundied thousand pounds, in twenty thousand shares of five pounds each, power being reserved r by the Act of Incorporation, to increase the amount of capital to two hundred and fifty thousand "pounds, two shillings and sixpence per share, to be paid asi deposit uporrapplication ior shares ; and as soonias one half of the number of shares are allotted, the' Act; of Incorporation will be applied for. Until Alter the passing of such Act, nojurther call will be made, and then only after due notice, at intervals of one month, and in sums not exceeding five shillings p(er share. The experience derived from the-operations_fjf other '" Insurance Companies, warrants the belief that not more than 103. or 15s. per share will ever be required to be paid up. - Judging f 10m the unprecedented'dividends declared : by Companies established through the-influence of Colonial Capital in Victoria, and which dbmpanies commenced operations at a period when iti'ost of the buildings insured were wooden erections, and when no greater facilities for extinguishing fires there than here,, it may be safely presumed "that dividends equally high will be declared by the* proposed Company. As an instance take the prosperity of the Victoria Fire'and Marine'lnLorance Company in Jlcl- - bourne, which has already returned its original Capital to the Shareholders/in addition to upwards of .13 percent, per annum, by iv ay of dividend and bonus. It is the intention of the Company when established to treat liberally .with all proposals for insurance. 1 From the foregoing statement of facts, -the Provisional Committee feeL assured that there cah be no doubt as to the success of the company_in realizing dividends proportionate in amount to those obtained in Victoria. Applications for shares will be received at the Company's tempoiary offices, Stafford Chambers, coinei of Stafford and M.inse-streets, Dunedin, oa and after the 7th April, "862, where forms'of application may be obtained. Dm notice will be given of the period of the first allotment. ." By order, lU ■■•■■-;£?* JAMES'W. HAY, ■ Secretary
