Hoaxing a Newspaper.—A curious hoax -was perpetrated on the Monthly Post on Monday, which, greatly increased the excitement throughout the day. This paper is supposed to be in the confidence, to some extent, of the Government; and, on Monday morning, it announced, in a prominent column, in large letters, that the Europa had arrived, and had brought no intelligence from Lord Lyons. As this information was not corroborated by any other journal a great deal of curiosity was manifested to know whether it was correct. At an early hour, telegrams: were forwarded to Queen.stown from the Stock Exchange, and enquiries were, from time to time, constantly repeated ; but the uniform reply was, that no Europa had been heard of. Nevertheless, the Post did not retract, and adhered to its original statement, even in its third edition. It was, however, entirely mistaken, for it was not until late on Monday night that the vessel really reached Queenstown. Whether the whole thing' was a blunder or a stock-jobbing ruse, \ cannot say. I should rather be inclined to believe that it was a case of wilful deception, as the amount of gambling which has been going on in the Public Securities is enormous, and many a fortune is now dependent upon a rise or fall of one or two per cent.— London' Correspondent of Aberdeen Herald.
