TOWN BOARD.

A meeting of the Town 80-ml was held yesterday at the offices in Princes street. Present— Messrs.-Cafgill (in the chair),. Switzer, Hulme, Shand, Jenkins, and Mollison. . . The fir.it subject for consideration was a letter from Mr iMwurd Casper offering a bonus of £10 to thu 15 sir.l to remove the obstruction fronting his own premises to Here'street. The proposal was unde:>iood to be declined. It was resolved that a side drain should be constructed from Begs ■ and Christie's corner to Mercer's corner, and that notices be served upon all the inhabitants, on the intervening line, intimating that they will be required to contribute towards the expense ; and tenders for the construction of the work were ordered to be culled for. It was further resolved that tlie parties resident between Brown's corner a'ud Walker street be required to pave the footway. The attention of the Town Board was directed to the present condition of Leigh-street, before the winter season sets in, the inhabitants .of that locality undertaking to contribute a reasonable proportion of the cost, in • accordance with the usual practice in such cases. Mr. Reid, the clerk to tlie Board, was instructed to prepare an estimate of the probable expense. A letter was read from Hayman Joseph, of the Hebrew persuasion, applying for the use of the Town Board office, on Sunday next and succeeding Sabbath, for the'use of his co-religionists. The clerk was authorised to express the regret of the Board at their inability to accede to the application. A bill rendered by Mr. Robert Muir, for tim* ber and labor to fence in a well at the Barracks, amounting to £4, was ordered to be referred back, with directions that a detailed account be sent in.

Messrs. Cargill. and Shand were appointed auditors of the public accounts of the department. Mr. Switsser moved, and Mr. shand seconded, •' That a committee be appointed, to consist of Messrs. Cargill, Hulme, Shand,'the clerk,' and the ■proposer, to visit the water-courses at the northern end of tho town, for- the purpose of devising the best means for p eserving the water." ' Mr.Cargill having excused himself from acting on the committee, in consequence of his multifarious engagements, the name of Mr. Mollison was substituted in lieu of that gentleman.

Mr. Cargill formally introduced the question of cellarage before the notice of the Board : and observed that the porch of the" Provincial Hotel' encroached upon Stafford-street. The clerk reported that he had before communicated with tho proprietors on this subject, but no notice whatever had been vouchsafed to his letter.

The question of cellerage was ordered/ to be referred 16 the Board's solicitor for legal opinion.

Mr. Jenkins called the attention of the Board to the drain at the botiom of Maclaggan-street, and recommended that a substantial drain should be forthwith constructed.

The Clerk remarked that the drain in question was of the specified size. Mr. Swilzer called the attention of the Board to the want of licenses for carters and draymen,' when a discussion arose as to the inherent powers at present 'possessed by the Board to deal with this subject; it being argued that a Bill for erecting Dunodin into Municipality was likely to be introduced during the ensuing Session, when the matter could be finally resolved.

Mr. Swilzer brought forward a proposition to the effect that tenders be called for erecting a reservoir near to the Town Board office, on ths beach, to bo built ronnd, and of such a height a to admit of water cavts being filled therefrom;

This subject was, by consent, deferred to the consideration of the next meeting, to be held on Monday, the 7th current. Mr. Mollison suggested that the inhabitants of George-street should be required to construct footpaths, but it was explained that under existing circumstances, such requirement could not be

pressed. A letter was read from James Lorimer and Co., offering to construct asphalte pavements in the public streets of the city, and enquiring if the Board would object to the plan being carried out. The Board had no objection "to the scheme providing it received the approbation of the citizens generally. The proceedings terminated at a quarter-past s'.x o'clock, the Board having adjourned to Monday next. " ■
