TAIERI RIVER REGATTA. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENCE )
The anniversary regatta announced to come off on Monday last, at the Taieri Ferry, was postponed till the Queen's birthday, as the earlier part of the day was very wet and xmpropitious, and comparatively few entrances had been made for the several races announced. About mid-day the weather cleared up, and was very fine throughout the afternoon, and as a number of people had assembled, comprising parties both from town and Tokomairiro, it was proposed to get up an impromptu affair to prevent disappointment, in a comparatively short time £40 was subscribed, and a tolerably good afternoon's sport enjoyed. The following races were contested with very much energy, and not a little skill: the last as usual, provoked the greatest amount of fun. : I. Whale Boats pulling Five or Six Oaks. Prizes —First boat, £10 ; second do., £4. For. this race four boats entered, but oiily three started; they came in in the following order : — Erst —Boy in Blue. Second—Flora. Third — Red, White, and Blue. 11. Boats Pulling a Pair of Sculls. Prizes—First, £5. Second, £3, This was an admirably contested race" from beginning to end. Three boats started, and came in, in the following; order :— First—Fanny, Second—Nameless, ThirdEmu. 111. All Boats Pulling Four Oaes, with Coxswain Steering. Prizes—First, £10. Second, £5. r our remarkably fine boats, and well manned, put in an appearance. They arrived at the flagstaff in the following order : — First—l/ucy, Second—Will if I Can. Third— JMoa. Fourth^Flora, IV. Duck Race, for £5. The man who for the nonce became " Duck," and got a duck in (ducking), we believe rejoices in the name of " Dick Taylor," and was pursued by a sturdy crew in the Moa, but, as might readily be expected, the event finally terminated in the Moa becoming victorious. The racing lasted altogether from about two o clock till half-past six, when a large company sat down to a really sumptuous spread, provided by Mine Host Dyer ; and the remainder of the eveniug was passed with much hilarity. ■ - The whole affair went off without accident or disturbance of any kind. Those of our readers who can appreciate really beautiful scenery, and who have not yet made a trip up the river to the ferry, have a treat in reserve; , It is but mere justice to Mr. Dyer to say, that they will find in his establishment an hotel replete with more than the ordinary amount of comfort and convenience, at even less than the ordinary charges.
