EARLY CLOSING.
To the Editor of the Daily Times. Sir,—Permit me to draw the attention of tho public to the movement that has been made amongst the principal storekeepers of Dunedin to close their places of business at 7 o'clock, p.m. I feel it would be necessary to enter into details to show the strong claims we have on a humane public to sympathise and co-operate with the movement. From the long and protracted hours of business we have been subjected to as a class, we are denied in a great measure the pleasure of either mental or bodily recreation, and it could be easily shown that the advantages arising from early closing would be mutual, as purchasers are generally better pleased with what they buy by the light of day. That the public have. ample time to make their purchases between tho hours of 8 a.m. ancl 7 p.m., no one will deny. We would therefore urge upon the public the necessity that there is for them to restrict tlieir purchases within business hours. As the ladies form the most influential part of society in all civilised communities, we would particularly solicit their approbation in this movement. Had we gained that our object would be accomplished. The boon we crave is in their power to either grant or deny. I am, Sir, yours, &c., An Assistaxt. Dunedin, March 4, 1562.
