After the ceremony was concluded, the mayor and several .ladies and gentlemen jiresenfc congratnlated the gallant admirals on their admission to the honor of-citizenship. Sir Hervey Bruce: [Tse your eloquence, Mr. Mayor, to prevail on Admiral Smart to jive us what he promised —four clear days in the Foyle. Sunday, you know, does not count usually—(Laughter)—and two of the days have bison so unfavorable"that the ladies could not visit the ships. (Awplause.) The Mayor : The admiral is mw on.i of tho citizens of Berry, who are ever anxious to please the ladies, and I'm sum the gallant admiral will be no exception. (Loud laughter.) lam sorry to say, Mr. Mayor, I am under orders }o sail on Wednesday morning. Ca.ninb Companions : A Bumaiixabi.k D'xj.—There i<u rinnarknnle do-r alive at Florence, of the n:i:a: of Bnmuowsky, who is to lm seen every day, and all day, either at the fashionable cafes or the oiht'i- 'plares to'which the jrnv world resort. Whether or no ho may Mavn originally belonged to anybody i" not known. At present he belongs only to himself, anl L»srraciously willinir to be fed' at men! times by the voluntary contributions of his fellow citizens. He is more like'a human being1 than a dog, and, from continually living among1 Italians, lias imbibed all the habits and folfica of yountr Tuscan noblemen. All of u.s have out humble' followers, if we only recognise thi'in; an.l Bomnowsky is not an exception to the rule. Another dour, who :s jet black all over, from ear ro tail, lms been .so thoroughly fascinated by the cool confidonue and Mircesa of Uomnowsky, that he Ins determined to link liis fortunes'in an unpretendingl way to the fortunes of bis superior, and to throw himself iii the public protection »s an illustrious doer's companion. Whenever Borrinowsky movoa,,. this black companion moves likes !iis shadow, a little behind him at bis side. The Tuscans have sriven him the liasuc. of t lie " Secretary," from his black and sob-r drew, and from his i-eiiriujr manners. The two dopj* inarch at state 1 horn's tiirnujrli the day from one place to anotlvr, <*.'.i-l dine together at the best restaurant in Florence, the " Secretary" refusing to touch & morsel till Bomnowsky has satisfied his taste. In the afternoon they walk side by side in the Ca-Rsine. among the carnages. At night they are to be found among the coffee-drinkers and the smokers at the large cafe ju.it above th« Piazza Santi Triniti. When ] it closes, they repair to another which is open for an hour longer :" and when that shuts too, they have fouivl a little cabaret which ..prolongs ita liO-spitclity till a later hour in the morning. Finally, they retire to rest on the doorsteps of Messrs. Plowden's bank. The humble "Secretory" lies down first, and Bori-i----nowsky stretches his illustrious parson on the top of him. Like all other foreigners of any pretensions to importance, the pair of dog*'go to a fashionable watering-place for the hot weather, and when the dogdays be;in, walk across to tba Baths of Lucca or Pisa. The causes of their voluntary migration arc s-'.iue as those which induces foreigners to migrate too. The "Secretary," like a great many other people, we prastune, simply goes to Pisa beeau.ve Borrinowsky goes. But why does Borrinowsky go 1 lie goes— fir-it, because it is the fashion, and because there is nothing else to do ; secondly, he goes to cool himself; .it I thin ly, he g-x>s. to distract himself. Under one of th-ise three heads may probably be rßnked all the r -asons for which foreigners, as a general rale, go to wateri -,g-place.s.— Spt ctntor. As the births considerably exceed, the deaths, them are probably seventy or eiglity human beings born per minute.
Wim.s's Pistol. —At the District Court on Friday, Dr. Wills sued Dr. Macadam, as .secretary to the Exploration Committed, for the, recovery of the pistol fouii'.l in the hail I of tha 00rp33 of Burke, the grouud f»r the claim bein.-' thnt the pistol belonged to Dr. Wills's son, who ha:! lent it to Burke. Before the case was i;,me into, defendant's counsel stated that it was the intention of the Uoyal Society to give tho pistol to Dr. Wills the moment thtjy were satisfied that they were justified in doing so. He considered it wonkl ba a great pity that any legal question should be publicly rn.i-.ed on the matter. Legally, the Society were entitled to retain the piftol, but if it was found to have boon tho property of Dr. Wills's son, it was their intention to give it up to him. Mr. Haukett asked Dr. Wills whether that was satisfactory, and he accepted the offer, remarking, however, that he had great reason to complain of the delay of the committee in replying to-his application. It was explained that the Royal Society did not moot every day, but the moment they found that Dr. Wills had a satisfactory title to the pistol they would give it to him. The plaint was then withdrawn.— Argil*. | TIIH EjIVEKOU AN!) E-MPREriS OF TitE FltliNCII . lN Piuvyte Lii'K. —All anecdote is told in Psivis, that a short time since, the Prince Imperial came into the Emperor's ealiinot, dressed as a grenadier with a knapsack upon his bark, and, in a word, arr.ijvd like n soldier setting out for some distant place. " Where are you going, Prince ?".said the Emperor. "To fi<>-ht for th" Pope, sire," uw the reply. The Empress entered lnmrMug, just as the Prince walked out, and was tn-it by tho acc'ni rehuko fVosn the Kmperor of, " 'Mnilamn. it appears that you iiavn no objection not only to leave Vrnnee for ever, but for your son to go along with you." Orders were then given for the lady who superintends the education'of the young prince, not, on any account, to allow him out of his apartment?, unless in company witli herself. It is, however, a remarkable fact tint the Empress, whether drivs'ivj in pubic or walking in ihe grounds of any of tho [mpirl'i) reshlencii', is tmver to be seen tor .1 moment with Uer <ou, and tlint- the iipai'tmonts of the I Prinze ILpmi I 0:1 y comnnmicnie with those 'of t^o • Jiuijiei'or.— Morning Star Parfe Coi'r^yo.ad«v>t.
