ATTEMPT AT MURDER AND SUICIDE. A WOMAN SHOT BY HER HUSBAND.
(From the Yass Courier, New South Wales.) Considerable excitement prevailed in town yesterday morning, owing to a report that a man named Gallagher, a small settler at Grabben Gully, had fired at his wife, and afterwards attempted to shoot himself, at Mr Scurr's inn, the Cricketer's Arms, North Yass. It would appear that on Monday evening, Mrs Gallagher came to Mrs Scurr's house, and enquired whether she could be accommodated with a bed that night. She was perfectly sober at the time, and drank no intoxicating liquor while in the inn. After partaking of tea, she retired to her room. On the next morning, while she was seated on a form in front of the bar, her husband, Mark Gallagher, accompanied by another man, entered the house. From words that passed between them, it is supposed that they had been conversing on the subject of Mrs Gallagher having left her home and of the search that was being made for her. Gallagher and his companion had a glass of liquor each at the bar, and on the latter leaving he was heard to say to Gallagher, "As there is a God above you, don't lay any violent hands upon her." Gallagher replied, "No, countryman, I won't," and the two separated, Gallagher returning into the bar. He then asked his wife where a certain
