COMMERCIAL.

We quote the following respecting the Melbourne Market from the Weekly Age, Dec. 6: — " The import market has not been particularly active to-day; still there has been a fair business doing, particularly in low-class brandies, and old butter and provisions, for New Zealand account. Flour has been m better demand, and sales of town-made Victorian are reported at £12. The sale of sugars ex Danube went off well, and an advance of fully~2os. per ton on previous rates may be quoted. Messrs. Eraser and Cohen offered this day, at their rooms, parcel of Siam .sugars, ex Heather Bell, for which £37 was offered and declined, but it ultimately passed at £43. They also sold the entire cargo of the sugars ex Danube, consisting of 4025 bags, at the following full prices: —Rations, £33, ss. to £36, 155.; middling counters, £37, 12s. ,6d. to £38, 10s.; good do., £39, 12s. 6d to £40; really fine counters, £41, 17s. 6d,; fine white crystals, £44, 15s. They afterwards sold arrowroot, in tins, 4d. to 4£d.; sago, 2d.; lemon syrup, Bs. 3d. to Bs. JM. per dozen.—Messrs. Gemmell, M'Caul and Co. sold by auction, this day, navy canvas, all faults, at ll|d. per yd.; Barcelona nuts, 2d. per lb.; American hops, 6d. per lb.; Cork butter (old), 4§d. to 5d.; Patna rice, all faults, £5, 17s. 6d. to £8, 12s. 6d. per ton; Feast's gooseberries, per dozen, 7s. 9d.; Worthington & Robinson's ale, old shipment, 6s. 9d. per dozen; bottled mustard, £—lb. 55., 1-lb. Bs. 6d.— The late, news from Otago has had little effect as yet upon the mining population. The storekeeping class, however, have been sensibly operated upon, and we hear that a very large number of town shopkeepers and country traders contemplate paying New Zealand a visit."
