Lo weiung Boats.—We (New Zealandcr) I have been favoured by Captain Moorman, of H.M. ship Cossack, with the following particulars of the admirable and life-preserving method of lowering boats at sea, even under the most unpromising circumstances; such an invention cannot be too generally adopted in the mercantile as well as in the royal marine ;—On a dark squally night, during the passage of H.M. ship Cossack from the Cape, ■was an alarm of a " man overboard." The life-buoy Aras immediately let go, and a boat as promptly inann.ed, lowered, arid, detached, by means of " Knaston's patent ship hooks;" tl^e ship at the time under all plain sail, with port studding sails set, and rushing through the water at the rate of lon knots. A rescue was thus effected, without waiting for the ship to be rounded to ; the boat being in the water, and clear away from the ship before the man had been above two minutes in the water. Under ordinary circumstances of lowering jjoats at sea, this man would in all probability have been lost. This admirable invention ha.s been in use in H.M. navy upwards of three years, and is that of the late Captain Knaston, R.N.

We are indebted to Messrs. Harnett and Co.. Printers, for striking off this issue: our own pressesi not being yet sufficiently repaired. With great difficulty we have succeeded in bringing out a double-paged supplement.
