Archibald John M'Xeil. an escapee from the Terrace Gaol at Wellington, and who was captured up the river yesterday, was brought before the Court this morning and remanded to appear at- Wellington on the 19th. The Chamber of Commerce discussed the Fast Coast railway question and adopted the following resolution: "That the members for the district be requested to urge on the Minister of Public Works the importance of completing the survey of the railway route to Poverty Bay during this summer, in the terms of the promise made to Mr A. L. 1). Fraser during last session of Parliament and to the Chamber by the Hon. Mr Hall-Jones on August 29th last/' The C.C. and D. Company have cabled the following report on the frozen meat market: —"There is a further fall in values of mutton and beef. Court, before Mr Barton, S.M.. two half-castes were charged with supplying liquor at- the Christmas feast at Ivhakapi to male and female natives. Fourteen persons consumed eleven bottles of whisky and were all drunk. The defence was that- the liquor was drunk at the place of supply and not taken away to the feast. The Court ruled that the place of supply was Dalgety's licensed wholesale premises, and accused caused it to be consumed at the feast. The fines and costs inflicted amount to £55.
