MUNICIPAL MARKETS.

At the City Council to-night the question of establishing municipal markets in Christchurch was referred to the .Municipal Markets Committee, who reported as follows :—"111 my last the Committee recommended the Council to establish a municipal market for the sale of fish, fruit, and vegetables, provided that power could be obtained from Parliament to compel the sale of all fish and fruit, at such market. At the last Municipal Conference the Council endeavored to obtain the co-operation of the conference with this object, but the proposal as submitted was rejected. Ultimately the Council's delegates brought up the question in another form, when the following resolution was arrived at: "That where municipal markets are established in boroughs of not less than 10,000 inhabitants ail auction sales of fish and fruit shall be held m such markets." Notwithstanding the recommendation of the Conference no legislative action has been taken to give effect to the resolution, and consequently your Committee cannot at present sec its way to recommend the Council to take further action to establish such a market. The Committee hope that during the next session, of Parliament the Government will introduce the necessary I lie report was agreed to without- discussion.
