Polling continued steady until six o'clock iast evening, at which time the booth was closed and the Returning Officer countine. The count occupied about 40 and shortly before seven the Returning < ifiicer (Mr La Roche) announced the result as stated below. It will thus be seen that) the progressive party, championed by the Chairman, have gained a decisive victory, as the three gentlemen elected were known to be in entire sympathy with the policy of the majority of the Harlx>r Board for the improvement of the port. Mr Paterson's position at tiie head of the poll is all the more commendable from the fact that he is comparatively a stranger to the district. His - aonly be attributed to a desire on "the part of the public that his scheme to overcome the dredging dilficulty shall not b- set aside uruii its practicability has been thorouehiv put to the test. Mr J. M. Brown's success, too, mav be taken as a token of the confidence with which his public life is regarded; while the return or .Mr K. Lane must be regarded by that gentleman as considerable Justification for the manner in which he has represented the borough on the Board in the past. : All three centlernen will take their seats I « the Board table confident ill the knowledge tiiat they are there as the elected reprusentat i ve> of the ratepayers, and not mi-ro!",- r", a j-csition which might otherwise he v;aut, owing to a lack of interest ;i;e part of the public.
