SECOND ANNUAL CARNIVAL. President: Dr Douglas. Vice-Presidents: Dr Garland, Dr Whitton, His Worship •the Mayor-(R. Milligan, Esq.), vjlessrs T. Williamson", P. Williams, E. P. Lee, ~E. F. Armstrong-, F. Milder, G. S. Jones. Captain :Mr L. S. M'Donald. Deputy-Cajtarn: Mr B. de Lambert. Hon. Secretary: Mr Prank Williams. Hon. Treasurer: Mr B. de Lambert. Committee-.'Messrs J. Grant, H. Delegates to the South Canterbury Centre, N.C.A.S.A. : Mr Chas. Snow and Mr Geo. Granger.

The public are indebted to the enthusiasm of the members of the Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club for the really stood swimming sports which eventuated at the public baths yesterday afternoon. The carnival was the second held under the auspices of the club, and if its success, as well as that of the one which preceded it, can be taken as as augury it is that the Swimming Club is destined to become not the least popular of the Tecreative institutions of the town. That the public appreciate the incentive that has been given to the art of swimming by the erection of the baths was evidenced by the large number which attended, the sDace set apart for patrons being filled almost to overcrowding. Care and deliberation had been exercised in the preparation of the programme, with the result that the carnival did not in any way lack vigor ; while the closeness of the finishes reflected the ability of the handicapper (Mr JT. Grant) to adequately gauge the capabilities of the competitors. The success of the sports was greatly assisted by the presence as competitors of a, large number of swimming enthusiasts from the sister town, and a 6 Timaru can boast of several "top notch" swimmers, it is not surprising that they should have carried away a share oi the rewards. Indeed, it would certainly have been an indication of something wrong had such worthy visiting competitors not been found in the front rank of placed men. Considering the disability under which young Bractfield, of the Timaru Swimming Club, taors. his performance yesterday was highIv meritorious, and there are doubtless many, even with both limbs, who would be better satisfied with themselves could they only do half as well in the water. There, were many exciting finishes, but tne Relav Race provided the excitement of the afternoon. The first heat of this event was especially keen, and resolved itself into a tussle between H. H. Fraser (Timaru Rowing Club) and F. G. Williams (Oamaru Swimming Club) for honore for their respective sides. It is doubtful if Williams was ever seen to swim better than he did on this occasion, but his steering was erratic and lost him the heat. The sports closed with a water polo match between sides chosen by Mr F. G. Williams and Mr J.' Colenso, the former winning by one point to nothing. A capable orchestra under the leadership of Mr E. Hunter dispensed a programme of music that was much appreciated. The sports were well managed by the officials, and the comfort and convenience of patrons were well provided for. Our thanks are due to the Press steward (Mr L. King) for his assistance. Following are the details of the several events: — ■ 25yds Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club Maiden.
