[BY F.LICTRIC TELEUHAI'ir. COI'VUIGHT.] ip R5 Press Association.! Received February 1. at 11.15 p.m. Sydney. February 1. Arrived—Koromiko. from Westport. Sailed (1 p.m.)-Mokoia, for Wellington. The-Lord" Mavor has invited the Cardinal to send the sums collected in the Catholic churches',to the Lord Mayors Fund. This course was followed by other denominations, but the Cardinal wrote to the Lord Mavor declining the request, and pointine out'that charitable aid from private sources enabled him to alleviate distress in cases otherwise overlooked by the public officials. Tn public charities a good deal of the funds were spent in salaries, secretaries and agents, while it not infrequently also happened that some individuals' insinuated themselves into the administration of these funds who did not en.jov. the confidence of the Catholic body. Such cases were not unknown in Australia The Lord Mavor states that he was pained to receive such a letter from the Cardinal. He had only one object; in view. There was no question of nationality or creed, but humanity and sympathy. His appeal had been magnificent in its results, and there was every reason to'believe the citizens were proud of the noble services the committee had rendered in gathering .the fund. He declined the to send a further letter to the Cardinal on the subject, and preferred to leave the public to form their own conclusions.
