REVENUE RETURNS.
(Per Pkess Association.) Wellington, January 28. The revenue for the quarter ended December 31st amounted to £2,591,387, showing an increase, compared w,ith the corresponding period of 1907, amounting to £143,590. The following table shows the sources of revenue, and includes a comparison with the same quarter of 1907:
The expenditure for the quarter is £2,449,831, or £97,055 more than that of the December quarter of 1907, the increases occurring under the following heads: Railways, £24,000; police, £12,000; defence, £14,000; agriculture, £11,000; education, £24,000; public buildings, £BOOO. January 29. According to an interview with the Premier published by the New Zealand Times, Sir Joseph Ward expects a surplus for the year of £142,849. The estimated revenue is £9,100,000, and the balance brought forward £767,849. The expenditure he estimates will be £8,925,000, and £BOO,OOO is to be transferred to the Public Works Fund, leaving the surplus mentioned. In his Budget he reckoned- the surplus would be £74,052. The Premier considers this t good result in the face of concessions in the Customs duties, sheep tax, etc., amounting to £425,000. During the last nine months the Advances to Settlers' Department has loaned out £939,015 to settlers and £239,510 to workers.
