FREE SCHOOL BOOKS.

In regard to free srhool books the Wellington Education Hoard adopted this afternoon the following recommendations of the inspectors:—(a) That in order to enable local booksellers to dispose of stocks on hand no change be made in the books for the current vear : (b) that each head teacher be informed of the amount available for his school, and that the selection be left in the hands of each head teacher, in consultation with the School Committeee. subject to the conditions : (1) That the books be selected from the list authorised by the Governor-in-Council, but_ if it be found desirable other suitable books mav be selected, subject to the approval of the" Board : '.2* that the list of books to be purchased be submiied to the Board for approval: (c) that for' supplementaTy readefs the surplus, if any. be expended on chean continuous readers now issued at prices from Id to 3d : (d) that where the head teacher can show that the supply of ordinarv and supplementary readers for P.S. 1 and 2 is quite sufficient to enable him to carry on the work of the classes efficiently without the necessity of further trarchase, he be permitted to purchase Liberty books for these classes; !2f that the inspectors be requested to make recommendations to the Board as to the books to be used after this year; (3) after careful consideration of the question ct disinfection of Echool books the committee came to the conclusion that the danser of infection is so very remote and the cost of periodic disinfection would be so considerable, besides being not easily practicable, as not to justify it in recommending expenditure for that purpose.
