DISTRICT PRIZE FIRING.

Thirty-two members of No. 1 Ccmpany competed at the butts this morning for the Government annual district prizes, but of this number seven retired without completing. The morning was a fair one for rifle shooting, the only drawback being, the dulnesa of the light. This was moreparticularly noticeable at the 600 yards„ where a slight drizzling rain fell during & part of the firing. The shooting was not. so good as it should have been, many of the best marksmen falling below th© average ; probably owing to the want of practice, caused through a supply off ammunition not having been received until lately. Volunteers Harding, Scott, M'Laren, Bannerman, and ot':iers, who commenced very well indeed at the two first ranges, fell off considerably at the. last range, Harding especially breaking; down terribly. Bandsman King, on thoi contrary, fired steadily throughout, audi headed the list with the highly creditable score of 48. Corporal Will,- a Wimbledon shot, we believe, also fired very well, but the excellence of his score was marred by a miss at the last range. Among the competitors were several who have not previously done any shooting, and this fact accounts for the smallness of some of the scores. Major Sumpter was in charge at the firing point, and Staff SergeantMajor M'Pherson was located at the, butts. The following are the scores of:: those who completed their firing :
