In the Legislative Assembly last night the Estimates were again dealt with. On the Education vote being proposed, Sir John O'Shannassy made a strong attack on the education system, and opposed the passage of the vote. Ml'; Murray Smith also spoke on the question, and favored the appointment of a Royal Commission to enquire into means for the redress of the grievances of the Roman Catholics under the present system of public instruction. It is announced that the services of Colonel Scratchley are to be retained by the Victorian Government for another Year.

A shanty-keeper has been murdered at Albany by a swagman, who also attempted to murder bis daughter, and fired the hut for the purpose of concealing the crime. The murderer has been arrested. Mr. Norton, who was shotatDubbo. is steadily recovering. H.M.S. Emerald, belonging to the Australian squadron, has left for the Solomon group in order to avenge the murder of the commander and several of the crew of H.M.S, Sandfly.
