In 1564 the Victorian Legislature fixed the salary of the Governor of that Colony at LIO,OOO a year, tut subsequently complacent Ministers have the allowances until it now amounts to Lla s ooo. The Age, in demanding a material reduction, mentions tha,t a special train, costing L 66, was the other day provided in order that the Governor might shoot six snipe. Such waste must cease. The saucepan that cooks the Governor's cauliflower—even the cauliflower itself—is State property. If he breaks a tumbler the State replaces it; if his cook cracks a: kettle it is " "Gdvern3ss^^rf^at^ - lfo wer-beds, and "Kitchen garden have confessedly absorbed more than L2OOO a year, whicl; is rather a high sum to pay for watering his flower-pots and raising peas and passion-fruit fqr his table. Some of our Exhibition visitors ought, I think, to be surprised at the cheapness of our luxuries as well as of the necessaries of life. In a leading street I daily observe a card in a restaurant window annnouncing "four courses and a glass of ale for sixpence" —a truly, liberal programme. It is only the other day that I travelled by a wellliorsed coach some 60 miles over the Black Spur and through some of the grandest scenery in the world for 3s—received with as much grace and apparent gratitude as if it had. been L 3. On-certain days of the week it is now intimated that a cleanly and comfortable steamer (the Williams) will carry passengers to Queenscliff and the other bay ports for 3s 6d return ticket— some 70 miles of sea travel. (Mem. for travellers—the cook can make curry). In the Ceylon Observer is a description of life iij Melbourne at 30s per week. Says the writer : "On my present pay of 30s. a week I am living and saving money, but of course slowly. I can get three good meals a day at (3d. each, as you will- see by.tlie bill of fare of tlie hotel; and I get a glass (half; pint) of good porter or beer for 3d., so that for 2s. a day I can get three gpod substantial meals with two glasses of good, malt liquor (English) per day, or I can get a pint of qQloflial ale, very .good. The tea and coffee, the moat, the Ash, ti}e vegetables, the sfiup, , the pastry, the- bread and butter J get really all good. In Ceylon you could not get for a rupee anything like what we can get for 2s. here. You need not be afraid of mv giving up my present employment without good cause j I had too Jjiuqh tpoufele to get employment to quit it easily, I have lodging with a respectable widow from.Cumberland, for which I pay Os. a week. I have a bedroom to myself, the use of a, bath, with clean bed. linen, towels, blacking, shoebrushes, soap, and lights, for this small amount. The house is about a furlong from the Public Library, where I spend one or two hours every evening, in a beautiful room fully 300 ft. long, and containing upwards of 90,000 volumes, in all languages, beautifully fitted up and furnished, §nd open free tfj the public; and in a direct line, lam only about a furlong from the Exhibition Buildings, but by the" nearest streets about a quarter of a mile. From this yoji will see that although my pay is small I might be much worse off than I am." Now, of course, all this we know to be true, but I doubt if many of us have fairly' considered the possibility of living, saying money, an<J enjoying oneself on 30s, per week like this cheery colonist, who is evidently the right grit for a new country.—"yEglss."
