NEW SOUTH WALES.
The Mayor of Sydney and the Herald have received from the Irish Land League cable messages asking thepa to publish the fact that the Lord Mayor of Dublin has opened a subscription through the Freeman's Journal, in order to secure a fair trial for Parnell and others about to be prosecuted for participating in the land agitation. The trials will commence immediately, and the expenses of the defence will be enormous. Similar cablegrams have been received in Melbourne, The death sentences of Peter Felix, for the murder at Stanthorpe, Sampson Pox, for wounding with intent to kill atDenilquin, and Walker, for the murder at Tamworth, have been commuted to imprisonment for life.
The condition of Mr. Morton, the Police Magistrate at Dubbo, recently shot by his paramour, is extraordinary. He is paralised and speechless. The bullet is in his skull undiscovered, but he continues to maintain high vitality and cheerfulness.
The elections are about half through, and are generally monotonous. A determined effort was made to secure the reiectment of Sir Henry Parkes at East Sydney, but the contest resulted in his being elected by a bare majority last on the successful list. .There has been considerable personation. VICTORIA. The Kelly-Gaunson episode is now fairly before the Assembly by a petition from Ballarat. Mr. Orkney has given notice of motion respecting the removal of Mr. Graunson from the Chairmanship of Committee, a proceeding which is not favorably regarded by the Reform League party. Eleven hundred residents at Ballarat signed the petition. QUEENSLAND. The publisher of the Australian newspaper against whom a verdict of LBOO was given for libelling Mr.. Lukin, editor of the Courier, has filed his schedule. Six Caledonian escapees arrived at Fraser's Island on the 24th. Four are French, one Spanish, and one Italian. They made the passage in 18 days, and for the last three had no provisions or water, They had a sun-dial, compass, and Atlas, and knew their position accurately. The Hon, John Douglas, ex Premier, has resigned his seat in the Assembly. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. The search after the natives who attacked a party at Burrows Creek, in the .Northern Territory, has been abandoned, the rains having oblitered the tracks. Great anxiety is expressed relative to the safety of Ernest Giles' exploring party. It is now stated that Giles is in Price Mourice's employment, and has instructions to examine and ride the of the leased country. He has a number of camels and ample provisions.
