RESIDENT MAGISTRATES COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before T. W. Parker, Esq., R.M.) A BAD CHARACTER. Eliza Wilson, charged with being drunk and disorderly, was discharged, She was also charged with being a bad oharacter, and behaving in an indecent manner in Thames-street on the 28th inst. A number of previous convictions having been recorded against the prisoner, his Worship inflicted a sentenced of one month's imprisonment, with hard lsbor, in Dunedin Gaol. ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT. Walter Rice, late bailiff of the R.M. Court, was charged with appropriating to his own use a oheque to the amount, of L 8 2s 5d., the property of the General Government. Sergeant-Major Thompson applied for a remand till to-morrow, which was granted. TRESPASSING. John Russell was charged on the information of his wife with trespassing on her premises on Sunday morning, she having procured a property protection order. Sergeant-Major Thompson prosecuted, and Mr. Johnstone appeared for the accused. Margaret Russell gave evidence to the effect that her husband came to her house in Cross-lane between 8 and 9 o'clock yesterday morning, when he was under the influence of drink. He opened the windows with some instrument, she thought a chisel. Witness told him to go away quietly, as she had a protection order and she would send for the police. He replied that he did not care for the police and refused to go away, and said he would always bother her. She kept the door locked, and after some time sent for the police and had him arrested. Witness was cross-examined at seme length by Mr. Johnston, but he failed to shake the evidence given. Accused waa then sentenced to three days* imprisonment. liAHCENY. John Stacey, on remand, was charged ■with stealing a coat and vest, valued at L2, the property of W. H. Mitchell,

Sergeant-Major Thompson prosecuted and Mr. Johnston appeared for the do' fence.

The evidence of a man named M'Guintv who had been locked up for drunkenness in the same cell as the prisoner on Saturday, was taken to the effect that prosecutor had given the coat to prisoner to sell for drink.

After Mr. Johnston had addressed tho Bench, His Worship sentenced tho prisoner to 12 days' imprisonment.
