Mr. Xewton, for the plaintiff, followed, replying at ;rreat lenirth to the ckfe::u ri , and criticlditg the evidence minutely. His Worship reserved his decision. The residence of Miss Allporfc in Ileidstreet had a narrow escape of being burned down on .Saturday. A tin of ashes and Kaitancat i coal cinders had been earned into a shed adjoining the kitchen. Sonic time afterwards the kitchen became filled with smoke, arid on a search for the cause being made it was found that the cinders had burned through the iloor of the shed and had ca;i_'!ii. the wall of the kitchen. V\ ith some di'rioulty the lire was extinguished. Had the iire not been so promptly discovered the building must certainly h.-vc been destr>A'ed. A :rai.i from 'Wellinc"":; informs us that !!:• Mercer of Mr. iJariit.-,. of Oainaru, :'.,r th; erection of the Rakaia Gorge railway ' ridge has been accepted. The FiiendlyS eieties' picnic to be held on Raxing I^a\ - prom ses to be the most suc-eos.-tVI event of the kind that has ever been h.M in the district. \ , .'e h.-.vc already mencioned that the sports eoinmittei; have adopti-d a capital juocfrai.tme, and that the prizes are liberal. The other sub-committees are etpially determined to do their share to make the aiYair as attractive as possible. The music committee have secured the services of tiio full Rifles Rand to play at the procession through the town in the morning, and throughout the remainder of the dr.y at EMer.die. 'l ite railway committee will endeavour to make special and advantageous .-.rran.'eiiieiitj v/'th the Railway Department for t!i": conveyance of picnic-inns, and when the fact i:"» taken into consideration that the nrobabie attendance is estimated at between .'jniiO :'.r.d -IO'.JO. drawn from all parts of the district, v/e think the Department should ur:.:.t the i'o'umittee a very substantial concciaion. As a ritie tl'.e railways reap a rich i:r.rv. <t from w ii-or".i::iied public pieiiics, and tl'.e aim »>f : o'heirls should therefore be to nwkc events cf the kind as popular as possible, and to reader every facility and encourai: meat to the organisers of public picnic*. iiave little doubt that the Friendly Societies will be met in a fair spirit by Mr. L ring, who no v.- has charge of the railways in this district.:
In .another column a reward of three pouridj is o'iered by Mr. Bezeti. the lessee of the Oamara Baths, for the discovery of the excessively playful individuals who are in the habit o: breaking the windows of the I'.iths. The lessee tells us thafc the depredators carry on their work systematically. No sooner does he repair the damage they effect than they renew their depredations. At last the game has become monotonous. as well as expensive, to the lessee, and he has been driven to the necessity of taking steps to discover the culprits, whose position, we warn them, is critical. In another column appears the first Annual Report of the Directors of the Commercial Property and Finance Company (Limited), and of the Liquidation of the Commercial Building and Mutual Investment .Society. From tliia"it will be seen that the net profit for the year ending on the rlOth September last, is L 6133, i7s 4d. Tins amount has been disposed of as follows, subject to the approval of the shareholders : - Ronus of 11 per cent., Ls.lof>, 9s 7d ; dividend ef I! per cent.. The profits of the \ amount to L-'OO, which is the largest amount that has yet been realised oy the concern. Jhe ai[vanees made to borrowers during the year amount to Up to tiie date of the report 1393 shares have been taken up by the companj". ! manv of them at a premium. The report, which, is well drawn, also contains a great qiiautKV of interesting information. < It i.-i unfortunate that visitors to the M-rnv.'ohto:: Show at Christ<.*lnm*h will not, in all probability, be afforded the pleasure of inspecting the third annual draft from the lirtir sv.ick herd or' shorthorns, which lately arrived per Rotortra from Mr. Samuel Gardiner's Run ora i'ark Estate. Victoria. They are in grand condition, but, notwithstanding this fact, the restrictions of the Cattle Act had to be su' mitted to, and they have therefore been placed in quarantine for tise period of one month. There is another disappointment. Tlie.se animals were- to have been sold immediately after the show by Mes-rs. Wrie'nt, Stephenson, and Co., in conjunction with Messrs. H. Matson and Co., but in consequence of their retention in quarantine, the sale has, of course, been postponed.
A hoax which in all probability will prove anything but a laughi g matter to the perpetrators has come under our notice. On Friday last tiie following notice, enclosed in r.n oitrcial envelope bearing the seal of the Resident Magistrate's Court, Timaru. was handed to more than one Orangeman who took part in the procession:—"R.M. Court, Tim.aru, 3th November, IS"O.—To . In the name of the Queen you arc hereby summoned to anoear before this Honorable Court to-morrow morning the sixth day of November to answer the following charge : To wit : That on the fifth d.tV of November you did wilfully and knowingly carry loaded firearms on your person, thereby endangering Her subjects, and further rendering yourself liable to a line of lift} - pounds. Herewith fail not. J)y order [here follow some hieroglyphics like ' C.IVJ Clerk.' 1 Little attention would have been paid to the document had it not been for the envelope. It is a scandalous thing that not only oiiicial envelopes but the seal of the court should be obtainable by persons who wish to exercise larrikin propensities. U e trust the matter will be fuliy enquired into.
