SMUGGLING TOBACCO.
(fIY TELEQR4TO.) WELtraGTOJT, November 4. The police having reason to suspect that smuggling was followed by some sailors from the wharf to the store of Alfred Campion in where the Customs officer, on searching, found 40 lbs. of tobacco, believed to be smuggled, Alfred Campion was charged in the Police Court to-day. (1) With having on the 3rd inst. knowingly had in his possession a package of manufactured tobacco which had not been stamped or marked as required by the Tobacco Act, 1879. _ (2) With having on the same date knowingly harbored, kept, and conoealed certain goods liable to duty, whioh duty had not been paid or secured, contrary to the Customs Act of 1858, whereby he had forfeited LIOO, for which penalty the Commissioner of Customs elected to sue. The offence bejng proyedj a fine of 1400, or six naantfys 1 imprisonment was inflicted. William Stowe, a sailor, was fined LSO, with a similar alternative, for aiding and abetting the offence. A similar charge against George Leonard was digmissgd.
